I couldn’t come up with an appropriate title for this post since as you’ll realize it deals with several things. They are basically as random as they always have been when they come from me.

Friends, I have been meaning to continue with the journey through Exodus but have been quite busy the past few days. What with spending several hours at my barber for a shave, manicure/ pedicure, yes, don’t roll your eyes looking at me; site visits out-of-town; meeting deadlines at work [why do deadlines sometimes all arrive at the same time?]; visiting my brother;  and reading some very interesting novels but I promise we will get on it very soon.

Our friends in NYC have been hit by a bad storm, I hear some of the Christian Right see it as an act of a god, their god, to what end I don’t know unless they mean their god is so destructive and lacks any sense of mercy, justice and decency! This a god who behaves like our city council askaris[guards] and their bulldozers who show up at night to flatten kiosks without any mercy or consideration to the people who depend on them[kiosks] for their livelihood.

I finished reading God’s problem: How the bible fails to answer our most important questionwhy we sufferby Bart Ehrman where he discusses the issue of suffering and with the storm in NYC

Hurricane sandy in NYC

, I think we can have some perspective. What would god be doing causing so much destruction to property and leading to loss of lives? Does such a god deserve to be worshiped or rebelled against? Your take!

And while we wait, let us just sit back and listen to a priest who shares my view on hell and why the religious [the church in particular] insists that it exists.

If you study the Bible Sir, you will discover that Jesus Christ spoke about heaven and hell more than every other Bible character put together! He had come from heaven and is now there so he knew what he was talking about! I am not at all surprised to hear a so called member of the clergy out rightly deny Jesus Teachings! Jesus himself and the apostles taught that there would be a great apostasy just before He comes back! Besides (no offense to Catholics) but Catholicism has long departed from the teachings of Jesus Christ. Its is a historical fact that the organization is not only a key proponent of evolution but has also killed upto 50 million people many of whom were true followers of Jesus Christ!
    Here is the evidence;

oh j. you more than anyone else amuse me. What branch of christianity do you ascribe to? You must have the history of christianity wrong. Until the reformation let by Luther and Calvin, all christians must have been catholics. So whatever brand of christianity you profess, you should be thankful to your catholic past.
I don’t have time to watch the video you have attached, I hope someone will and comment about it.
I’m not going to waste more time telling you Jesus did not exist simply because in other instances we have had this same discussion, I have directed to evidence to the contrary which it appears you don’t consider.
So whenever you are ready to live in the 21st Century, I will be the first to welcome you with open arms!

@ Makagutu, Sir, I subscribe to “Biblical Christianity”. by this I mean the teachings and practices of Jesus Christ and the Apostles as taught in the book of acts and the several epistles! You are very right sir that for centuries Catholicism was dominant. but there were a minority who were true followers of Jesus Christ. You do not need to be a theologian to figure out that Catholicism is not biblical Christianity. i speak as one who was a catholic for about 2 decades! Catholicism does not count for true Christianity. If you watch the video (or someone watches for you and tell you) then you will have christian history in the right perspective. Allow me to briefly substantiate my claims about catholism: Here is a list of heresies they have sunk to and the years they were instituted:
OF ALL THE HUMAN TRADITIONS taught and practiced by the Roman Catholic Church, which are contrary to the Bible, the most ancient are
    1) the prayers for the dead and the sign of the Cross. Both began 300 years after Christ.
    2) Veneration of angels and dead saints. 375
    3) The worship of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the use of the term, “Mother of God”,
    4) Priests began to dress differently from the laity 500
5)The doctrine of Purgatory was first established by Gregory the Great 593
6)The kissing of the Pope’s feet
    7) Worship of the cross, images and relics was authorized
    8) Holy Water, mixed with a pinch of salt and blessed by the priest, was authorized 850
    9) Canonization of dead saints, first by Pope John XV
10)The celibacy of the priesthood was decreed by Pope Hildebrand, Boniface VII
    11) The Rosary, or prayer beads was introduced by Peter the Hermit, in the year 1090.
12)The Inquisition of heretics was instituted by the Council of Verona in the year 1184. Jesus never taught the use of force to spread His religion 1184
    13) The sale of Indulgences, commonly regarded as a purchase of forgiveness and a permit to indulge in sin.
    14) Confession of sin to the priest at least once a year was instituted by Pope Innocent III., in the Lateran Council
    15) The Bible forbidden to laymen and placed in the Index of forbidden books by the Council of Valencia
Jesus commanded that the Scriptures should be read by all. (John 5:39; 1st Timothy 3:15-17). 1229
16)The Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX
The Bible states that all men, with the sole exception of Christ, are sinners. Mary herself had need of a Savior. (Read Romans 3:23; 5:12; Psalm 51:5; Luke 1:30,46,47). 1834
    17) In the year 1870 after Christ, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of Papal Infallibility
This is a blasphemy and the sign of the apostasy and of the antichrist predicted by St. Paul. (Read 2nd Thessalonians 2:2-12; Revelation 17:1-9; 13:5-8,18).

18)In the year 1950 the last dogma was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Just to mention but a few.

Again, thank you very much for that history lesson of the Catholic church, I have learnt something. Tell me, if you may, before the 1st council if there were other christians who were not catholic? If my reading is correct, the Arians who lost at the 1st council didn’t accept a divine christ, so which biblical christianity is the correct one? The one written and promoted by the victors or the one held by those who lost at the 1st council?
Two, I asked you as a biblical christian, do you have a girlfriend and if you do, does she see the minister for cleansing after her MPs? Or a biblical christian is a NT christian and if so, do you hold serpents or better still commands mountains to move and they don’t bite you and they move to the sea respectively? Help me here, I need to understand it very well so I don’t repeat the mistake in my next post you see 🙂

@Makagutu. Morning Sir, You raised a valid question on what Biblical Christianity is. Please allow me to attempt to explain. Pardon my lengthy response. This issue confuses not only non-Christians but also many Christians. First and foremost, a clear understanding of the context of any Biblical text will clearly reveal its truth. Likewise any text taken out of context is a pretext.
One unique thing about Christianity (Biblical Christianity) is that unlike every other belief system, no one can be born a Christian. Every individual has to make a personal, independent & informed decision upon presentation with the Gospel. (Allow me not to quote scriptures for now to shorten my response but will gladly do so incase you need clarification). From the teachings of Jesus and the apostles no one becomes a Christian just because they have “Christian” names or go to church regularly or fill on government forms “Christian” under religion. A Christian in the Biblical sense is one who has fully submitted their entire life to Jesus Christ! Not only as Saviour But also as Lord. So it is very inaccurate to claim that 76% of Kenyans are Christians or that 2billion people in the world are Christians. The real number is lower that.
You raised an issue concerning the Law of Moses affecting ladies & MPs. Allow me to put everything into perspective. First of all, many people think that God gave the Israelites (through Moses) only the 10 commandments. He actually gave them 613 Laws. These included, Moral, Social & Ceremonial Laws. These were to govern the Spiritual, Social & Economic aspects of their lives. Why these many Laws? The context is that God had promised Abraham that through his descendants He (God) would bless all humanity (By raising the messiah through them). At that time of history, religion was a national issue. Each nation (Kingdom) had its own god/gods. The Israelites had been in Egypt for 4 centuries. All they knew in terms of way of life was what they saw in Egypt. When God singled them out for the purpose mentioned above, He wanted to make it clear to them He was not only the creator of the entire universe, but also that He was their moral authority. Also that He was the only true God. Many of the laws were actually addressing specific religious practices that were being practiced by their pagan neighbours to their false gods. E.g. cooking a goat in its mother’s milk, offering babies as human sacrifices and many unconventional sexual practices. (This has led many atheists to label God as too preoccupied with sex but he was addressing the pervasion that was so prevalent among their neighbours.) So since they wallowed in the miasma of paganism and dint know any better, God had to give them laws to address their health issues, their interaction with each other and also interaction with God.
There is one other key purpose the Law of Moses came to serve. When a medical doctor needs to administer treatment, he needs to prove to the patient that He/she is sick and needs treatment. The Law of Moses came to show us our sinful nature and show us how God’s standards of holiness are way beyond us. The Law was also a foreshadow of Jesus Christ. When It stipulates for example that for a sin offering one is to offer a male lamb without blemish That was a foreshadow of Jesus Christ who was God’s sinless sacrificial lamb.
        When Jesus came as a fulfilment of centuries of specific prophecies, He said that he had come not to abolish the Law but to fulfil it! But what does that mean? It was clear that it was impossible for the Israelites & everyone else to keep these Laws, and so God spoke through His Prophets e.g Jeremiah, Isaiah & Ezekiel that he would set up a new covenant with His pple that would incorporate the whole world. Then He would personally transform the hearts of men and lead them in His truth. So when Jesus Christ said that he came to fulfil the Law, two things were implied;
        1) He was the only people who lived up to God’s standards of holiness.
        2) The sacrifices described by Moses were only foreshadowing His ultimate sacrifice on the cross after which no other sacrifice would need to be made for sin.
By this, as Paul rightly put it, we are no longer under the Law Moses but the Law of Christ. When asked about the greatest commandment He said it was to loving God with all our heart, mind and Soul. And secondly loving our neighbour as ourselves. The Law of Christ is in fact on a much higher plane than even the Laws of Moses! Here even looking at a woman with lust is sin. Even being angry with someone for no reason is murder. But in the new covenant, Jesus himself empowers the believers to live this out. And also His sacrifice on the cross is sufficient once and for all.
About stepping on serpents, taking poison and casting mountains into the sea, like I said, any text taken out of context is a pretext. So let’s look at the context. Jesus said these to His disciples when He was charging them with going out to preach the Gospel. He was telling them that Indeed there is a devil and although he would be against their mission God would by His power protect them. That is the context. And We see an example in Paul’s life that when he had been sheep wrecked at Malta, a poisonous viper bit him but he live. (Though he and many others were actually martyred). Jesus is clear that any prayer prayed in accordance to god’s will he will answer. So on had better be sure it is God’s will to perform any particular miracle before they pray for it!
