New atheists! Old atheists!

In many debates and apologists writings, many of them have made a distinction between a group they call new atheists and old atheists. As far as I can tell, none of the theists who use these terms have defined who fits into what group and last time I asked Debilis, our resident apologists whose main occupation is to misrepresent atheists, he didn’t give me a straight answer. While we wait to be told who fits where, here is a quote by the great Nietzsche, the assassin of god, who I think the theists would gladly call old atheist, and here is a gem on christianity, I found while reading the blogs sites I subscribe too.

The Christian conception of God–God as god of the sick, God as a spider, God as spirit–is one of the most corrupt conceptions of the divine ever attained on earth. It may even represent the low-water mark in the descending development of divine types. God degenerated into the contradiction of life, instead of being its transfiguration and eternal Yes! God as the declaration of war against life, against nature, against the will to live! God–the formula for every slander against “this world,” for every lie about the “beyond”! God–the deification of nothingness, the will to nothingness pronounced holy!

Nuff said.

    Keep posting, Noel.
Eventually, there will be nowhere for these twits to hide.

Lovely. Did you see Prayson is trying to tarnish Nietzsche? I have been hammering him about it. Silly man.

The distinction of New Atheists from previous atheists is the refusal to accept religious privilege in the public domain and to criticize it in the same. New Atheists won’t just shut up, keep their mouths closed, and go away like atheists have long been expected to do. New Atheism is active atheism, and I think the religious are aware of the difference between these literate folk and the quiet ones from ages past. The distinction is quite real and its having an affect to the extent that religious leaders see it as a major threat in need of response. And it here that New Atheists come well prepared for battle and are changing hearts and minds of the next generation at a rate never previously encountered. That’s why the internet is now considered the place where religion comes to die. And that’s Good News! indeed.

Now I get the distinction, thank you very much and access to the internet should increase world over, hopefully religion will die a peaceful death sooner!

In a way I like the emergence of New Atheism and with it the New Atheists; they have little to reason about; so the world would soon come to know that they have little useful to offer.

Yes, I agree with you. One can hardly find any evidence at all that promoting scientific literacy, critical thinking, reasonable public policies based on merit, and respect for Enlightenment values can even hope to compete with the likes of ancient superstition and modern woo, wishful thinking, empty assertions and explanations of POOF!ism untethered from the reality we share leading to the exercise of bigotry, discrimination, and legal inequalities that cause real suffering to real people in real life. In comparison, New Atheism offers so little that it can hardly be considered ‘useful’. After all, paarsurrey, it’s not like you use exactly these New Atheist values in order to try to discredit them in favour of urging others to follow your magic book.

  4. Great quote, Mak! God as the contradiction of life is quite an important way to look at it, I think. And Nietzsche easily qualifies as the old and the new atheist. 😉

Thanks lively, sure, this is a great quote and Nietzsche was such a great critique of christianity, I don’t get why these current crop of apologists think we are any worse!

I think (and could very well be wrong) but the Old Atheists were the ones who suffered under the Inquisition and the New Atheists are the ones who came afterwards. I once read something along that line, but I can’t remember where. Sorry! Much love and naked hugs! 🙂
