At last women can drive in Saudi Arabia.

This is fantastic news. Doing a Google search, I’ve not seen any latest reports this morning so I’m wondering what the stipulations are? When they lifted the ban for women to ride bikes, they were/are only allowed to ride them for entertainment and a male relative or guardian must accompany women riders. I’ve signed several petitions for their cause over the last couple of years. I couldn’t be happier for Saudi Arabian women. This is a huge victory. Congratulations. Saudi Arabian women will also be able to run for office and vote in municipal elections beginning in 2015.
Maka, thank you for posting this. Great news to wake up to. =)
Wishing you have a great week, too.

Victoria, looking at the car, I don’t think they are driving as yet and I have just searched on the net and I see a planned demonstration in October to persuade the government to withdraw the ban.
I have embedded a video of a lady who defied the ban and drove and tells her story.
Have a great week too

The video was excellent. Thank you for posting it. Manal has my utmost respect. I remember when she was arrested and imprisoned. And I remember signing a petition for her release on Change.org. She also reached out to former Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton. It was unreal what Manal went through.
I read a book not long ago (“On Saudi Arabia: Its People, Past, Religion, Fault Lines – And Future” By Karen Elliott House.) She spent many years there and said the women in that culture, though well educated, seem to experience a form of Stockholm Syndrome in which prisoners sympathize with their captors.
The world is watching. As Manal so poignantly stated in her speech, a society can never be free when its women are not free.

Am glad you liked the video, I found it quite nice too!
They say elsewhere, to know how free and a civilized a society is, find out how they treat the lesser members of their society.

It is very sad to note that here it is, 2013, and this sort of information is still news. I would think these sort of gender prohibitions would have quietly disappeared decades ago. Thank you, my Nairobi brother, for posting this.
Are you away the entire week? Travel? Holiday? Please be safe and enjoy! Much love and naked hugs!

No no, am not going anywhere, just want guys to have a fine week wherever they are 😛
It is strange that in this day and age there are such prohibitions. Really strange!

Great share Mak. It’s about time these women stand up for themselves. 😀

Oh yes. I read the comments on the Ted link and am appalled by people who think if women drive, then they would be involved in all sorts of funny things. Some people have warped minds, if any!
