Hello friends.
The last few days yours truly was away on a business trip and that explains the conspicuous absence. I hope I wasn’t missed a lot :-P.
Lamu, rather, Amu town is one of the seven islands in Lamu County others being Faza, Pete and I can’t remember the rest. It’s a two street town, both streets running parallel to the sea front. The only car in this town is for the district commissioner. To move around the town the mode of transport is donkeys[ there is a lot of donkey shit] or foot.
The food, or rather the few places I managed to sample their food had very good food.
I was disappointed with my hotel, not that it was bad, far from it but I noticed they discriminate based on colour. I don’t whether it is the hotel policy or the mistake of one of the workers. As I have mentioned elsewhere, there is a lot of donkey shit in this town so the hotel asks its guests to leave their shoes at the door which I readily obliged. From there on, they tell you to proceed bare feet as they offer no sandals. These white couple came in and were allowed to get in with their shoes. Am not sleeping there when I go back.
There are young men who though a little bit helpful are a serious menace. They almost follow you everywhere and shaking them off is quite some work.
The bar was quiet, the DJ played not so good music but the atmosphere was very relaxing.
Impressive slide show. You should do more of these posts!

You really should have confronted the staff about the disparity in enforcing the shoe rule. Me, i would have loved it! Much to my wife’s horror I don’t even wear thongs to the local shops. Barefoot is the way to go ๐

Many people were walking bare feet in the streets and I would except for the donkey shit everywhere.
I was not in the mood for a confrontation but the funny thing is some of the stuff that were watching were not amused and they told him so. I saw no need to make an issue of it after that.

A good idea. You can get nasty parasites from feces.

Stunning shots you took Mak! What a beautiful place and you’ve portrayed it very well indeed. If I was there I would have given them hell for treating you that way. Skin colour should not make any difference especially not in their line of business. I think it’s very bad that they treated you like that. You should write an email to those concerned. I am not one for bare feet and they should tell the people to bring slippers or something to put on when they’re inside. With my luck they will steal my shoes…hahah. The design made by your office are spectacular indeed. Thanks for sharing. ๐

The place is indeed beautiful, powered by one thermal generator and everything happens on the beachfront.
I usually raise hell for such treatment or refuse to comply but I was on my way out and decided am not staying there a second time. I don’t know why they didn’t think they should provide sandals or tell their guests to at least get some. I don’t carry sandals when am just away for a day. that would be too much luggage for nothing.
Thanks for visiting and for the compliments on our grainy pictures ๐ we promise to improve on them.

Well, they are going to lose lots of business if they go on like that Mak and I agree with you. ๐
You are very welcome and I could not see any grainy pictures. I think they were gorgeous and would love to see more. ๐

Thanks for the pictures. It looks like an interesting place. It’s a shame about the discrimination. I would think that would be odd in this day and age.

You will be shocked, it still happens in this day and age and in many places for that matter.
Once we went into a shop with some white friends and we all had rucksacks, the guard at the door allowed my colleagues to go in with theirs but wanted me to leave mine in the luggage deposit. I objected and went in with it. I don’t think they even realize they are doing it

I like your photos very much.
I hate the discrimination. It’s a smart decision not to stay there next time. You’ve been very realistic writing the text. ๐ ๐

Usually if you leave your shoes at the door it gets a polish ๐

When we first built our retirement home, I made everybody take off their shoes. After about 18 years we have become lazy.
Yes, post more pictures. So many interesting places most of us…at least me….have never heard of.

I looked it up on Wikipedia. I hadn’t heard of it either. Intellectually, I was aware that Kenya had a coastline, but for some reason it’s not what springs to mind when someone says Kenya.

I know. Most people know of Mombasa and Malindi only since they are usually the most talked about places.
