I’m not sure if I ‘liked’ this conversation, though it certainly was an interesting way to spend an hour this morning despite several cringe-worthy moments. In particular, Coyne’s assertion that he subscribes to the belief in the miracles of Christ’s virgin birth and resurrection. Neither of these concepts are unique to Christ, and both assertions predate Christ. Assuming that someone as educated as Coyne is familiar with the preexisting claims of both, is he asserting that god, being aware that us humans were already spreading false stories of virgin births and rising from the dead, THEN decides to give us the real deal? God is reduced to stealing his (most miraculous!) miracles from human folklore?
Then towards the end Coyne asserts that the injection of a soul into humans took place as part of the evolutionary process, however as certain as he is in this human ‘soul injection’, he is equally certain it did not occur in the evolutionary process of any other living thing. Really? How can he be so certain that heaven is not teaming with dinosaurs, micro-organisms, oak trees, and porcupines? Because they don’t/can’t ‘believe’? Maybe porcupines should re-think the whole atheism thing.
Finally, can we stop that politically correct ‘he or she’ references to ‘god’. You’re really not fooling anyone with that, you know. We know which gender ‘he’ is implied to be.

Interestingly Alex, Celsus, a 2nd-century Greek philosopher and opponent of Early Christianity, who was a contemporary of Origen, both of whom were much closer to local legends than we today, wrote that it was common knowledge in his time, that Mary, wife of Joseph, was put out of Joseph’s house when it was learned she was pregnant by a Roman soldier, named – or possibly nick-named – Panthera (“panther“) – believe at will —

Completely interesting! But somehow Son of Panther just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

I agree with your views Alex. What I liked about Coyne is his honesty about evolution when in the beginning he says he knows it is the best explanation we have of how life has progressed his other additions of soul and gods are I think maybe his way of ensuring he is not jobless.
Why he thinks the christian god decided to wait for evolution to do its thing before injecting the soul is a ridiculous notion.

Indeed.
Eddie Griffith, a comedian, says if god created us with a sense of humour, he wouldn’t be pissed off if we make fun of Jesus or god. He must be having a good laugh of it somewhere how his minions are doing. It is impossible to comprehend how a being said to have so much power gets offended when I say s/h/it doesn’t exist.

He starts off well enough but sticks to spewing stuff that ensures he remains within the fold.
