I have always said I will fight for any course I believe is right but avoid the death if I can. In the Wanderer and his Shadow, Nietzsche expresses the same sentiments more eloquently
Dying for the “truth.”— We should not let ourselves be burnt by our opinions: we are
not that sure of them. But perhaps for this: that we may have and change our opinions.
I would add that we should change our views if we have evidence that another opinion is better. Changing your views without good cause, is as bad as not changing your opinion in face of proper evidence.

No contest. You are right on that my good friend

Except sometimes, with old age comes increasing rigidity. I’ve changed. I doubt I will in future.

If I understand you correctly, we can say you have reached an age where most of the opinions you hold, you are not likely to change them easily?

Let’s just say I’m waiting for a convincing argument to prove otherwise.

With age I find I am less rigid! Go figure but death is not an elected option : )

Death should not be an elected position. Does this make us cowards?
There are people who have died for ideas, was it a right thing to do especially when the idea turned out to be right?

My intent was to reveal that I am nor ready to die! I am finally ready to live. If I had a terminal incurable illness then death would be my elected option.
In reference to your question, many valiant and righteous souls throughout history have died for causes that they believed in. If it changed the course of history and they chose death to make the point then I am in agreement with their personal choice. (regions causes exempt here)
I doubt I will ever have a cause that I would die for, with the exception of my children. Do you have such a cause Mak?

I don’t think there is a cause I would readily walk to my death for.
There are people for whom I would take a bullet but I think there number is so small.
Some deaths have changed the course of history, but such men and women didn’t live to see the fruits of their fights. There is no need of a dying for a course, but fight for it, you must and with passion taking every caution not to die while at it.
Am happy when I hear you are ready to live. That brings a lot of cheer to my day. Live to the fullest, enjoy life and be happy.

I’m a lot less rigid than I was even five years ago. I’ve learned I don’t really know all that I think I know.
There was a time I thought I’d die for what I believed if need be.

Compared to you, I know am quite young but I have come to the point where I don’t think I would want to die for an idea, no matter how strongly I am passionate about it. What if am wrong?

No, I believe ladies are either under 18 or 21 😀 and I meant you are 21

I hear they say it is good to feel young at heart regardless of how many fingers you need to count your age 😀

Yeah, until you act young and pay for it the next day. But then again, they say that 40 is the new 20. So I’m not doing too bad.

If you were happy as you were acting, the payment is probably worth it.
Oh yeah, they say life begins at 40 and as such am yet to begin life. 😦

As evidenced by the pretty good save he came up with. A wise man sometimes has need of “a way with words.”

I think a man should stand up for his convictions. That said if one was facing the flames, or the firing squad, or some other hideous death, a change of opinion might not be such a terrible notion.
Which BTW is often how conquering hordes of religious zealots managed to gain a few converts. I guess the adage ‘live to fight another day” applies.

Standing up for my convictions, yes, but if I can avoid the death yes. Ideas never die, people do.
The young man in front of the tank in Tienanmen Square died for an idea, whether it matured is a different story.
The young men who by killing themselves setting off the uprising in Egypt died for an idea whether the outcome is what they died for is yet to be seen.
Several religious zealots have died for their delusions, it is yet to be known if their supposed gods were impressed with such acts.

To die for an idea is a pretty rigid stance. When death is in the balance doesn’t this change the weight of the argument for the idea?

Those who have died for ideas will think differently. But I think dying for an idea is quite a rigid stance, you may just be wrong or the idea may eventually die with you
