My friend here has answered this set if questions and I would like to add my two cents to them. The questions appear here. The person who asked them writes
Some Questions Atheist Cannot Truly and Honestly REALLY Answer! Which leads to some interesting conclusions…
and am not sure how they could know we couldn’t answer them. I will go ahead and answer them.
1. How Did You Become an Atheist?
One day I woke up and found I was too intelligent to continue believing in fairies [short version]
Long version is I started to read the bible, met arch and the rest is a long story.
2. What happens when we die?
As far as I can tell, we die. But I will say more about this when am dead.
3. What if you’re wrong? And there is a Heaven? And there is a HELL!
I hope that the god in charge of that Hell is not a tyrant of god like the Abrahamic god.
4. Without God, where do you get your morality from?
Have you read Euthyphro?
5. If there is no God, can we do what we want? Are we free to murder and rape? While good deeds are unrewarded?
If there is god everything is permitted. If there is no go, it is all up to us. Last I checked, god orders rape, condones slavery, commits genocide. As someone said, and I paraphrase
I cannot let a being who drowned his children train me how to raise mine.
6. If there is no god, how does your life have any meaning?
Must life have meaning to be lived? Is it not enough to be alive?
Well, once I used to think there was some cosmic meaning to all this, then, I realized it was all up to me. Meaning in life has to come from me. It can’t be given.
7. Where did the universe come from?
I don’t know.
8. What about miracles? What all the people who claim to have a connection with Jesus? What about those who claim to have seen saints or angels?
I will be waiting for a definition of miracles.
The key word in the next part of the question is claim.
9. What’s your view of Dawkins, Hitchens and Harris?
How is this important?
10. If there is no God, then why does every society have a religion?
This is really a very silly question.
Great atheist catechism you wrote. On question 8, I would to add that Spinoza [and others as well] has written that people call events “miracles” just because they are ignorant of the actual causes involved.
LikeLike
Thank you my friend.
In talking of ignorance of causes, god, for the believer, seems to be default answer where they are ignorant. They cannot live with I don’t know.
LikeLike
I’m loving it Noel!
How do people become religious? Surely the default is not to believe until one is indoctrinated?
So the answer is I didn’t become an atheist. I never became religious.
2. Is this a trick question? We stop being alive. Our body closes down and we cease to exist as a living entity. Sadly. Unless of course, you are a dog, in which case you go to the Rainbow Bridge.
3. I’m on a winner there. All the intelligent fun people will be with me in hell. Wicked evil gays, people who have sex before marriage, and all the boring people will be sitting on a cloud with the bossy patriarchal teacher.
4. From within.
5. No and no. Why should good deeds need a reward? Isn’t ‘doing good’ ie helping others sufficient reward in itself. Not everyone needs payment or prizes.
6. The meaning of life question. I wake up every morning pleased to be alive for another day. I make the most of my life that I can. I have a fine partner, I give a home to unwanted dogs, I help my friends and neighbours, as they do me. What more can I ask for?
7. I’ve got a degree in ancient and medieval history and archaeology. Not physics. Go ask someone better qualified. Who cares where it comes from?
8. Quite frankly they are deluded. The same people probably believe in transubstantiation.
9. I don’t have one.
10. Because there are a lot of very silly people. And because people are frightened of death.

You mention a very important, without forcing religion down people’s throats, it is likely no one would be religious.
The person who asked the questions I think must have seen them a very serious questions.
And your answer to #10 is spot on. Man has been ignorant and superstitious for most of his existence.

I think you, or your friend, should do ten questions theists can’t answer. Except, I doubt you would get honest answers.
Q1, wd become ‘How did you become religious?’
I became religious when it was forced down my throat. It would more likely be some drivel like I was born with the essence of god within me. Or similar. There was never a moment when I didn’t feel God’s love and guiding hand. I didn’t ‘become’ a Christian, I was born one. Etc etc etc
The trouble is, none of us have enough religious readers to get the questions answered!

Whenever I have addressed questions to the religious, only the atheists followers have responded. Asking such questions would just be for the choir to sing around here.

I figured, because to be honest I don’t read religious blogs, so it must work the other way around.
I know others do, but they hold no interest for me. Some blogs I read are written by religious people, but it is usually peripheral to the main blog subject. And I ignore the beauty of god comments anyway.
But still, this was an interesting exercise and comparing answers is insightful.

Every once in a while there is a religious blog with questions for atheists or there was once I read of a guy who wanted atheists to repeat some prayer for a whole month and report back.
Most times when I read religious blogs dedicated purely to religion, I leave wondering whether the authors just arrived from a distant planet. They are so often detached from reality it shocks

I may have to ask those who come here for suggestions.

On point 9, I would ask do all theists agree with each other?
LikeLike
Very important question. One wonders what that question has to do with atheism

Atheists only agree on one issue (the existence of gods). All other issues, such as free will, morality, abortion, are things atheists can and do have different opinions on.

You are indeed right. The rest of the questions are not tied to atheism.

Which is further illustrated by the existence of atheist creationists (such as Raelians).

I think most believers do not see these issues as separate. It is either their god or nothing

Religions is a package of several believes, while atheism is only concerned with one issue.

I thought atheists agreed on the absence of gods?

well yes. I will correct that

Excellent responses, my Nairobi brother. Regarding question 5: people murder and rape, with or without a deity. They do it within the body of believers, no matter what the belief system. Nice job on this post!

They murder in the names of deities unless we are to believe if acts are done in their god’s name they are moral.
Thanks buddy

I don’t think it’s about religious folk ‘knowing’ we atheists are unable to answer these questions, we HAVE answered same these questions – over, and over, and over. While it’s understandable for a 3 year old to ask the same questions over and over in an attempt to learn, I don’t think the religious ask these questions with the desire to learn, but rather to bait. When will we learn that they don’t care about the answers? All the answers they require have all ready been provided to them.

Alex you are right. The intention is to bait. This is evident even with what this particular person wrote before asking the questions.

I’ll get back to you on these when I’ve more time. Great idea.

the ignorance and arrogance it takes to think that atheists can’t answer such questions speaks volumes about the Christians asking.

Indeed. To think we will be stumped by these questions is the highest level of ignorance

It seems to be a rather desperate lie that they tell themselves in order to pretend that atheists haven’t a good reason to be atheists.

Some are even so arrogant to suggest there are no real atheists that everyone is religious but they do this by redefining what religion is to the extent that the word loses any meaning.

Your answer to 10 is brilliant, Noel. Treat it with the utter contempt it is worth. I hosed myself laughing. Good one.

I’ll answer a few of these here: 1.) I became an atheist because I so much enjoy the flavor of cooked christian. 2.) When we die, we no longer have christians around us bothering us because we no longer exist. This, in a way, is my idea of heaven. The universe, like it was for the 13.8 billion years before we existed, will be just fine once we’re not here. It doesn’t care about us, and it never did. 4.) I get my morality from the christians who say I have no morality because I do not believe in their particular god. I thank them greatly for this. It has freed me of any twang of guilt I might have felt from eating them and poisoning their wells.

Let me toss in an answer to 9. I love those fellas. my intro to Dawkins freed my mind to explore brave new thoughts, like what’s the best side dish to serve with christian infant tartare. But seriously, I’ve the utmost respect for those gentlemen. What they’ve done, and do, is very brave. And I really miss Hitch.

10. Have you heard of the Pirahã people? According to anthropologist Daniel Everett, they have no gods or religion or creation myth.
