You by now know what happens when yours truly is feeling lazy, he asks a question or several of them.
In the bybill, when Jeebus Hubris Christ is asked by Pilate what is truth, he doesn’t answer the question. We can assume that either he didn’t know the answer or he didn’t think we should know the truth. Any mention of Jeebus Hubris Christ made on this blog refers not to a real person but the narrative construct in the New Testament of the good book.
- What is truth?
- How can we get to truth?
- Why is truth necessary?

Truth is fleeting. It is momentary relevance.
LikeLike
There is not an absolute or a standard for truth?
LikeLike
Of course not. There are some truths that maintain relevance longer than others, but everything is ultimately transitory.
The laws of nature appear to be a truth, but 14 billion years ago they were not the “truth,” and at some time in the future (if we have a big crunch) they will again not be the “truth.”
Can a theist honestly identify something that is an eternal truth?

A small question: are the laws of nature known to as a thing in itself or in its effects?
Do you think this laws would appear the same if we viewed them from the pov of a fish or a cow?
Theists don’t comment here a lot. We miss their contributions here. But i hope they could help with that.

I would hope so, too.
It is the effects we know. They are predictable today, and probably tomorrow, but those effects will one day be meaningless. If there is a truth, an un-moving truth, then it is not in this universe.

1.) Whatever those in power say it is. 2.) By believing what you’re told without question. 3.) It keeps the powerful powerful and the weak thinking they got that way because they deserved it. OK, roughseas, that should count as three answers toward the 82.

How do we establish it is right information? Is it because it is of antiquity or there is a standard
Is the scientific method subject to truth? How did we get to it as being a means to truth
Is this the case in all decisions or just some
I will have to watch that musical a second time

well, one can pitch headfirst into solipsism. So, I am content with truth as being that which I experience and others do too, like my infamous white hot bar of steel. ๐
my favorite version of Superstar is the one with Glen Carter as Jesus. I think you can see bits of it on youtube. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275434/

These all must be trick questions and I’m not falling for it.
The truth makes for a boring story. I love fairy stories and reading made up bybill type things.
BUT JUST DON’T TELL ME THEY ARE TRUE.

I love fairy tales, they are usually very interesting

1. The truth is different things to different people.
2. The truth is attained through investigation, through knowledge and through what can be proven.
3. Truth is only necessary to those who place it in importance.
Those are my tired thoughts at the end of a very long day at work. Much love and naked hugs, my Nairobi brother. Have a great weekend! Mine starts now! ๐

Truth is subjective from one to another. However, I require it. I do not think it’s fleeting nor momentary. Integrity comes to mind.

The truth is that we laughed ourselves silly when reading this. Anything you tell me about the bybill and Jeebus Hubris Christ must be the truth Mak. I’d rather believe you. ๐

Hi Mak,
To clarify the contextual necessity of your question, one has to understand the meaning of it within its primary context, which is the Judeo-Hellenic ethos of its emergence.
If anyone cares for a bit of exegesis, please consider the following:
alรฉtheia: truth
Original Word: แผฮปฮฎฮธฮตฮนฮฑ, ฮฑฯ, แผก
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: alรฉtheia
Phonetic Spelling: (al-ay’-thi-a)
Short Definition: truth
Definition: truth, but not merely truth as spoken; truth of idea, reality, sincerity, truth in the moral sphere, divine truth revealed to man, straightforwardness.
HELPS Word-studies
225 alแธtheia (from 227 /alฤthแธs, “true to fact”) โ properly, truth (true to fact), reality.
[In ancient Greek culture, 225 (alแธtheia) was synonymous for “reality” as the opposite of illusion, i.e. fact.]
The above, last sentence is in my oppinion the central meaning of what truth meant originally, leaving the undersigned with the opinion that truth is the factual reality as opposed to illusion.
Having said that, Christianity above all must be declared an illusion according to the root value of its own concept of truth…

I wish more of my fellow deconverted theologians to come forward in order to clarify the degree of deception religion has been exposing their followers through a cleaverly devised system of “transliterated scripture”, which has virtually nothing to do with neither the original message (if any…), nor the validating prophetical bridging, without which the presupposed fulfillments turn to be nothing else but instruments of fraud, darker in intent than the emotional manipulation extrapolated onto their naive, peace-of-mind seeking subjects.

Wow. Truth seems to be a wonderfully misused concept! The devote of Jesus would tell you that his reading of the Bible and the things it says about Jesus are truth. In fact, many of them seem determined to shove that “fact” down your throat just in case you didn’t agree with them immediately. It is an opinion. So is my own take on things like the origin of the Multiverse and my place within it. It’s an opinion. OK.
What about E=MC(squared)? So far, all the tests and experiments devised and done to question that have shown it to work, to be true. It doesn’t seem to be just an opinion. Was it the same “before” the Big Bang? Might have been, we just don’t have anyway of knowing, and the concept of “before” doesn’t even work at that point. Oh well.
And that’s the truth!

If you hide a ball behind a tree and then find the ball, will you have arrived at a truth? How could this be different from devising tests, performing the tests and calling that a truth?
LikeLike
Scientists don’t devise tests in order to confirm their theories. You are correct that this would not be a reliable way to confirm them. Rather, scientists develop hypotheses then devise experiments to try and FALSIFY their hypothesis. Science does not claim to discover truth. All scientific theories are tentative and subject to change if new data is produced. A scientific theory represents the best explanation that we currently possess given the data.
I think there probably is objective truth in the universe, but we will never be able to know it with absolute certainty. We can only calculate probabilities of what is most likely/not likely true.

Maybe the thought that there is an objective truth is the greatest lie?
Greg, if I can call you that, am not trying to make a joke about science, but tell me, how is formulating a hypothesis to falsify different from hiding a coin behind a tree and later finding it? Is the difference in kind or in degree

Yes, Greg is fine.
I, honestly, am not understanding your analogy. Maybe you should explain to me how you see them as the same, then perhaps I will have a better understanding of where you are coming from.
