1. what is faith? atheists certainly have it.
I believe this is true. I believe strongly that if there is any truth, the only way to arrive at it is through reason. We have no other way to arrive at judgments except through reason. It is not an issue of faith to say when I die, am dead. I have no reason to suspect otherwise.
2. from evolution
The religious person who believes Adam and Eve were created as adult beings cannot believe in any form of evolution. It would be an absurd position to believe in a god guided evolution and god’s perfect creation.
3. from the big bang
There is no evidence from the BB cosmology of an agent, divine, intelligent or what have you starting it. Besides if the theists spent more time reading than praying he would know the BB theory talks about Planck time after the beginning of inflation. We have no way of knowing what was before that, if there was ever a before.
I may hasten to add here that I don’t know how the universe came to be, if it did come to be.
4. From incomprehensible chance on a biological level:
this is the argument from design in a new formulation. It doesn’t hold.
5. From natural order:
Let’s pause a moment. Is order a property of a thing or is it our way of looking at things? Any argument from order is misguided. The same way any argument from beauty would be.

Accuse me of scientism if you wish, but unless you can show your other ways of knowing, fuck off! No matter how many days we fast or how long our prayers, we will never know the answer to 1+1

The theist believes his god created everything ex nihilo. Why would they find it difficult to accept that life could come from non life if it can come from nothing?

My lack of belief in gods says nothing about the value of my thoughts. This is a silly argument.

Of all silly arguments, this strikes me as the one most beloved by lunatics. What would the scientists have compared the present universe to arrive at the conclusion that life wouldn’t be possible if the values were different?
In conclusion, this theist could have spent more time reading his bible than fiddling with things beyond his pay grade.

God said it was good. At no time does he make improvements to it. The believer has to decide either to follow the bible or ditch it, having the bible and mixing it with current scientific learning doesn’t seem to work

I disagree, mak. God has revealed himself in both the Biblical record and in nature. I use both to understand him fully. Some Christians don’t like this fact, but i dont see it as a problem.

Instead of saying I have faith in something, I try to say I rely on something or can depend on something because I have seen the proof that something works or is possible and reasonable.

The whole “thoughts have no value” section pissed me off. (Actually, the whole original post pissed me off, but I don’t feel like going into that big of a rant). One of the reasons that theists need their deity and their place in heaven is because they need to feel important. If my thoughts are nothing more than synapses firing, who gives a shit. I am one measly little mortal on one measly little planet. I am not important in the grand scheme of things. I think the fact that I am unimportant is one of the biggest things that fuels me to do more in life, to strive to be a better person. We are all born insignificant, so lets become significant to each other. I don’t need some god to make me feel important, I don’t need a soul, and I don’t need heaven or eternal salvation or whatever. All I need is to be kind to my fellow man, to become significant to those I meet on a daily basis.
I don’t know, I may be way off base here. I just got so angry!

As an empiricist, I have no ‘faith’ in anything – religious or otherwise. Trust must be earned, and beliefs must be substantiated. Assertions, claims, and opinions are not equatable to facts until proven. Since I – like all human beings – posses only a limited understanding of the cosmos, I chose to differentiate between what I’m inclined to believe in and what I actually know to be true.

The only reason why ‘believers’ fight so against ‘non-believers’ is only because they know they are not making any money out of us anymore. I always saw them as ‘salesmen’ – out to make a buck and the minute they had you, they didn’t care anymore. The after-service sucked.
Even my African Grey can think for himself and it’s more than I can say of some of these ‘believers’. I feel sorry for them. 😉
