Indeed, fundamentalism is a much more serious problem than simply the exercise of religious beliefs.

But it is not just fundamentalists who have a problem quitting religion, most people can’t even begin to doubt it

I don’t know if there’s any difference between fundies and ordinary churchgoers relative to quitting religion; but, I do know there is a huge difference between them regarding the societal impact of their religion. One is a wolf, the other a sheep. One is dangerous, the other is not.

There has been the argument that the ordinary church goer is an enabler of the fundamentalist by not coming out strongly to oppose them

Of course. Ordinary churchgoers are not leaders, they are followers. You won’t find a lot of independent thought among them.

I think those who are religious and doubt always see it as the devil tempting them, not whether what they believe is true

That is probably their excuse to not explore their doubts.

We can see this especially (although not exclusively( in the religions called the “Abrahamic” ones (named so after the guy who would have killed his own son, because his god told him to do so, and who thought this was just, and only stopped doing so because his god told him so).
