To each unthinking being, heaven, a friend
Gives not the useless knowledge of its end
To man imparts it, but with such a view
As, while he dreads it, makes him hope it too
The hour concealed, and so remote the fear
Death still draws nearer, never seeming near,
Great standing miracle! That heaven assigned
Its only thinking thing this turn of mind
Alexander Pope
Alexander Pope! 2nd most quoted poet in English, next to Shakespeare, and my favorite neoclassic poet. “True wit is often to advantage dressed/ what oft was thought but ne’er so well expressed”.

You must have done so well in poetry.
I finally got to read Pope

You’ll like him. Highly intelligent guy. Everything is written in rhyming couplets. It takes a minute or two to get used to sometimes. Neoclassic writers, and other artists, emulated the great Greek and Latin writers from the past. It’s a great period in literature.

Wrote a paper on that back in the day.

Maybe if I had met you earlier in life I could have learnt to appreciate poetry more. My teacher in high school didn’t help matters

Bad teachers can spoil good things. I hated Shakespeare because I had a shitty teacher of it in high school. Didn’t learn how awesome he is until I acted in the plays with a theater group I was in a few years later. Bad teachers take the joy outta things. Good ones help you appreciate it.

You are right about bad teachers. He made literature, but especially poetry, look really hard

I just read the passage aloud. All poetry should be read aloud. (even my feeble attempts. )

You call yours feeble attempts! Really? They are well done and high up there

Agreed. Read it aloud backward, however, and you’ll raise demons from hell who’ll take over the world. So, don’t do that. 🙂

Why couldn’t he just say, “Life is the pits,” and be done with it?

Haha. That would be too short I guess.
How are the preps for the holiday coming?
Since pope is here, I have decided to read Pope

Yes, I read of his visit and wondered if you will be critiquing it?
Our day will be quiet. Cooking with all the trimmings is too much for us anymore. We will be having a big bowl of black-eyed pea soup and warm bread. And there will be no leftovers and very few dishes to wash up. For which I am very thankful. 🙂

I haven’t heard what he has said given I don’t watch TV. I check the dailies tomorrow.
What I keep asking is, why if he has such a direct line to god, does security have to be so tight? Is there a difference between practice and theory

Because he was a neoclassic poet and needed to make a rhyming couplet. So, he could’ve said, “Life is da pits/ it gives me da shits.” That woulda worked.
