Man’s miserable life

To each unthinking being, heaven, a friend
Gives not the useless knowledge of its end
To man imparts it, but with such a view
As, while he dreads it, makes him hope it too
The hour concealed, and so remote the fear
Death still draws nearer, never seeming near,
Great standing miracle! That heaven assigned
Its only thinking thing this turn of mind

  1. Alexander Pope! 2nd most quoted poet in English, next to Shakespeare, and my favorite neoclassic poet. “True wit is often to advantage dressed/ what oft was thought but ne’er so well expressed”.

Why couldn’t he just say, “Life is the pits,” and be done with it?
