All the works and all the productions of nature are really made by necessary and accidental causes, which are blind and completely deprived of Reason. These works and productions do not at all demonstrate or prove the existence of a sovereign intelligence or consequently, the existence of a god who made them as we see them.
It is therefore absurd and ridiculous to say or think that printed characters, ink and paper, which have no movement in themselves, could arrange and bind themselves so well together that they could make a book.
The above are wise words by Jean Messlier
Oh no no! These creations absolutely demonstrate intelligence far beyond the human type you and I have!
It’s actually the most dangerous threat to our species, the threat of AI.
Take this as an example –
– one computer with a truly general AI, one that could plan and reason within its own parameters, could do in ONE MONTH, what every scientist and great thinker on Earth could do in TEN THOUSAND YEARS!

But entirely bereft of passion – could a passionless entity, AI or otherwise, paint a Van Gogh?

They very well could paint such a picture .
I don’t think that you’ve quite understood AI (a ‘general AI’, that can do everything we do, trillions of times faster etc). (An AI machine the size of a basketball court could compute everything, every possible simulation until the end of time!
Such an AI could do everything any artist has done – and do it better, without fault literally for eternity!
BUT, I do agree that there is something utterly human about art, and a machine might never be able to create that!
I will fight against those robots with you, in WW3 lol

Would that computer plug itself to a power source?

We would like to think that we’ve controlled them, but, being incredibly more intelligent an us, they will find a way to connect to our internet (they’re already in it!)…and then….our downfall.
The source of power is what sources every teen girl and boy in their Instagram accounts! The more people that look at these young, stupid people, the more undying followers they have!
Once a self-planning, self-governing computer system (AI) becomes even somewhat viable. our world as civilians comes to an end!
To answer your strange question (are you in the CIA, that’s the sort of question they’d ask ,believe me, I know!)
Your CIA has NO IDEA about the tech that will bring your country down….oh boy you’re in for some shite! Boy oo
Any AI clever enough to plan, would build its own power source……to answer the question originally posted in the comments! lol

YES! Yes it is.
This (AI) is actually a bigger problem that ISIS and Climate Change combined!!
A truly autonomous AI could deal with ISIS and global Islamic terrorism within one week – probably one hour tto be honest! lol
Just think what they’d do with us? People who don’t contribute much to anything!? We’d be the first to be killed off! lol 😦

Hard to see much difference between your concept of AI and the herd’s conceptions of God. You seem to know so much about what AI could/will do just like they seem to know so much about what God did/does/will do.

What? I don’t believe in any sort of God of any kind. But I can see your point.
I know that a supremely advanced AI would be Godlike to us, that’s not controversial, is it?
God and Gods don’t exist, but AI’s certainly will exist in time – these AI’s will inevitably be more powerful than anything we’ve ever seen before, they might even be the end our species! We might just be surplus to requirements……whatevs! lol 🙂

Definitely.
Water does not try to achieve any results. It continues to flow downward blindly as long as nothing blocks its way. And in the event its way is blocked, it makes another.
A tree grows towards light without any intelligence.
Cells replicate blindly.
Matter has in itself the ability to move.
Aquinas was trying to make belief in woo seem intelligent, he failed

“A tree grows towards light without any intelligence.”
Actually, a tree grows away from light, light retards plant growth. A flower, for example, appears to bend toward light simply because the darker side of the stem grows faster than the side exposed to light, resulting in bending of the stem.

I thought trees like in a forest grow taller towards light. This is new. One learns a lot on the web

Of course plants can’t employ photosynthesis without light, so any plant grown in the dark will be tall, weak, spindly and pale. Start two plants in pots that are normally grown from bulbs – when they break the surface of the soil, put one in a sunny window and the other in a closet. The one in the closet will grow much taller, faster, but will be weak, as I say, and without chlorophyll.
