God

This joke is too good not to share.

The little boy was found by his mother with pencil and paper, making a sketch. When asked what he was doing, he answered promptly, and with considerable pride:
I am drawing a picture of god
But, gasped the shocked mother, you cannot do that. No one has seen god. No one knows how god looks.
Well, the little boy replied, complacently, when I get through they will

I agree with the first part of your statement, but disagree with the second part. I’m not sure what the situation is like in Kenya, but here, few Christians (fundamentalists excluded) would claim they have the correct image of God. Most will only admit to having an image of God that suits them. And for many that would be nothing at all.

Did you know that in survey conducted in NZ in 2008, a significant number of Christians did not believe God existed. It varied by denomination with the Baptists being the most theistic with only 7% believing there is definitely no God. On the other hand, 36% of Methodists are certain there is no God. Over all Christian denominations, less than half of the faithful are certain a deity exists.

What fundamentalists refuse to accept, and atheists frequently forget, is that religion, including Christianity, does not require a belief in the supernatural.

Religion is the belief in the supernatural. Without that qualification, anything can be called a religion.
In Kenya, I think most religious people are fundamentalists.

So are you saying that I and most liberal Quakers are not religious because we don’t have a belief in the supernatural? There are a large number of people in this country who don’t believe in a deity yet consider themselves both Christian and religious. I’ll concede it’s not religious in terms fundamentalists might accept, but nevertheless I’m convinced it is.

  3. Let me get this straight. God exists, but cannot be seen. Those who see God are wrong, but God still exists anyhow. Ugh…

I’m trying to figure out why the mother would be shocked. After all, God is whatever one conceives him/her/it/they to be. It tells something about the person, but nothing about God.

But perhaps because I’ve never been a TRUE CHRISTIAN(TM) it’s all beyond my comprehension.

This joke would not work so well with Islam.

But in any case that that religion does not seem to encourage humour.

Maybe even Christianity doesn’t encourage humour. They have been forced to live with it.
Muslims should relax, they can’t take religion too seriously

  7. Can we say that the reminder to atheists that…..religion, including Christianity, does not require a belief in the supernatural… is an oxymoron?
This asked, I hope you will also like a similar joke:
A teacher told the children that it was impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it is a very large mammal its throat is very small. A little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, “When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah.”
The teacher asked, “What if Jonah went to hell?”
The little girl replied, “Then you ask him.”
    Greetings.-
