Nehemiah, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is quite adamant about the marriage of foreign women, including Moabites, being a “treacherous sin” against God:
Nehemiah 13:23-27 RSV
“In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab…I contended with them and CURSED THEM and beat some of them and pulled out their hair; and I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons or for yourselves…Shall we do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”
DAMN those foreign women! God bless inbreeding forever!

I know your intent is to criticize Christian belief, but you might want to be aware that you’re coming awfully close to some anti-Semitic stereotypes.

I don’t.
The dangers of cultural inbreeding is an established fact, and the Jews have inbred for thousands of years – the Bible is full of it – Abraham married his half-sister, Sarah, and sent for Isaac’s cousin, Rebekah to be his wife, rather than have him marry any of the local girls – Jacob married two of his second cousins, Rachel and Leah. And there are precautions against marriage to ‘foreign women’ throughout the Torah.
My information came from a Jewish website – I can hardly be considered anti-Semitic for for repeating history, whether fable or not – the fable would never have been told if it didn’t conform to cultural norms.

He wasn’t attempting to defend the idea that Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead to an audience of non-believers. Rather, he was attempting to defend the idea that Christians would also be raised from the dead to people who already believed that Jesus had been raised.

How is that relevant? I’m not saying Paul was correct to assert that Jesus of Nazareth was raised from the dead. I’m answering the question posed in the blog.

In Judaism, prior to Christianity, there existed a belief that Yahweh would (at some point) resurrect all the faithful that had died in a single event. It was this General Resurrection which the Christians at Corinth had doubted, not Jesus’ specific resurrection. Paul is asking, “How can you say there is no General Resurrection of the faithful? If there is no General Resurrection, not even Christ has been raised; and since you already believe Christ has been raised, it follows that there will be a General Resurrection.”

It wasn’t intended as a defeater to your claim. It was intended as a clarifier. The Corinthians didn’t doubt Jesus’ Resurrection. They doubted the idea of the General Resurrection.

Yep. Paul was a Pharisee prior to his conversion, so it is natural that he defends this position. The idea of a General Resurrection would have been really strange to the Gentiles at Corinth.

Wasn’t Paul the guy who spread Christianity? As such, wouldn’t he have been defending his belief to pagans. I think I once heard something to the effect that there could have been a Christianity without Jesus but there could not have been a Christianity without Paul.

I believe that’s true – without Paul, Christianity would likely have died the death it so richly deserved.
