the archetypical atheist

I thought I knew them as those without belief in deities. I have been wrong all along.

This author and his fan base seem to know something we don’t. One wonders why they would claim Lucifer is an atheist at the same time claim Lucifer rebelled against god? Am I missing something?

Aside from Lucifer or Satan being as fictional as the God of the bible, he could not be atheist because he would actually know for a fact that God existed.
But a different point… Satan in the ot is not the adversary of God, but the adversary of man in god’s behalf. He works for God at his command to test mankind to obey or disobey God.

If the new testament is to be believed, Satan knew who Jeebus was. It is difficult to again claim Satan is atheist

Check out the Process Church of the Final Judgment, a weird hippy cult from the late 1960s/early 1970s.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Process_Church_of_The_Final_Judgment

They worship Satan, Lucifer, Jesus, and Jehovah as aspects of reality who will all be reconciled at the end of time, a Judgment Day they were eagerly anticipating.

Jehovah, the wrathful God of vengeance and retribution, demands discipline, courage and ruthlessness, and a single-minded dedication to duty, purity and self-denial.
Lucifer, the Light Bearer, urges followers to enjoy life to the full, to value success in human terms, to be gentle and kind and loving, and to live in peace and harmony with one another. Man’s apparent inability to value success without descending into greed, jealousy and an exaggerated sense of his own importance, has brought the God Lucifer into disrepute. He has become mistakenly identified with Satan.
Satan, the receiver of transcendent souls and corrupted bodies, instills in followers two directly opposite qualities; at one end an urge to rise above all human and physical needs and appetites, to become all soul and no body, all spirit and no mind, and at the other end a desire to sink beneath all human codes of behavior, and to wallow in a morass of violence, lunacy and excessive physical indulgence. But it is the lower end of Satan’s nature that men fear, which is why Satan, by whatever name, is seen as the Adversary.

I discovered this weird piece of history through an interesting musical project called Sabbath Assembly which draws upon Process theology.

  2. yep, it’s a bit hard to believe and not believe in something.

for entities that don’t supposedly get along, they certainly spend some quality time together.

Reminds me of an old song called “Undecided”. Part of the lyrics go, “First you say you do and then you don’t”

  4. That post reads like a fantasy novel. Satan, a seraphim, an unreal thing, is a non-believer in the deity that made it though it knows said deity is real because it rebelled against it and was tossed out of heaven by it. Someone needs to give the intellectual giant who wrote that post a dictionary. He or she clearly does not understand the meaning of multiple words in the English language.

I guess they take the existence of god for granted. I god exists and you deny his existence, you rebel against him, since he exists. So their understanding of atheism is someone who rebels agains god. Funny.Looks like these people cannot even think the non-existence of god (or they do and it makes them afraid).

The point I never understood about Christian theology was why would the Devil rebel against God. What I mean is that if one knew with all certainty that God existed and that God was all powerful, then to rebel would be sheer stupidity.

This is where the Christian view of atheism falls apart. Christians take to heart the Bible teaching that deep down everyone believes in God even if they don’t admit it. Thus they continue to characterise atheists as rebels not as non believers.

Thus atheists need to always try to get Christians to acknowledge that the atheist is not a rebel but a non believer.

I think many Christians refuse to even entertain the possibility that their God may not exist, not because they are certain of it, but rather because deep down they are uncertain and try to even banish that sort of thought because they know that it if it is entertained it will destroy their faith which is more fragile than they care to admit.

How would it even be possible to oppose the will of an all powerful being? A being they claim acts by willing? This to me is evidence they don’t think through their claims.
If they believe Satan, knowing god was powerful, still rebelled, they ought to accept their god allowed this to happen

I am trying out Christianity, but I don’t think the devil is an atheist. He did however believe that he was his own god – an ideology that many atheist also fall under.

    • I’m one such atheist. My disbelief in gods has lead me to truly believe I am God. Only fools and drunks can’t see that my disbelief in gods proves I’m God. Yes, I know, many will doubt that I am, indeed, God, but their doubt in no way changes the absolute truth that my disbelief in ANY gods proves I am, indeed, God. Those who doubt my disbelief in gods makes me God are fools. And, they owe me money for doubting what I say because they are idiots to doubt me. Disbelief in a god or gods deifies the disbeliever. Has any other truth made more reasonable sense? Has any other statement been SO true that believers cringe at its truth? Of course not. Atheists are gods because they disbelieve in gods. Sensible, real truth. $Amen$ Only idiots doubt this. Unfortunately, there are many idiots in the world. Maybe, one day, the idiots too will disbelieve in gods and become God. Until then, I say to them, bugger off and leave the god business to those who disbelieve in gods. It’s the reasonable thing to do.

That’s an interesting way to look at it. I don’t know if there is a God or not (no one does). I don’t like to claim either way, because I can never possibly know. I don’t believe I am God though, because my knowledge is limited and therefore requiring of something/ someone greater than I.

College Blogger: Given that I doubt you are a medieval Norse rover, and you disbelieve in Norse Paganism, does that mean that deep down inside you believe that you are in fact Odin? Or maybe Loki? THOR is popular now as well!

Well, to Christians, God is who they submit their will to, so when I choose to control my own will, the assumption is that I am God. I am not necessarily agreeing with the assumption, but I think there is some logic to it. If pagans had the same assumption about what role God played, I would see sense in them viewing me as whatever deity they chose to see me as.

To call atheists god(s) is only possible after a redefinition of the word. The first problem is what is god? How can an atheist be a god?

I can tell you good friend that almost no one submits their will to any gods. Your will is moved by the greatest motive unless you say when you buy ice cream, it’s god’s will.
And no, you can’t control your will.

College guy … you have been bamboozled. Satan did NOT rebel against god. That’s an old wives’ tale that has been taught these many years and is entirely false. The scriptures where this is “found” says nothing about ha-satan (the OT version of the accuser). It’s talking about a king.
