I saw that this morning. Sad, eh? Lots of people blaming different people/situations but the thing I thought was this: There’s one creature NOT to blame, and that’s the baboon. What a magnificent animal and how tragic that s/he had to die. ๐ฆ

I’m so damn tired of some fucking moron doing something and then the animal gets killed. The idiot should have been shot, not the ape.

What CAN you do in that situation? Can you stand there and calmly tell the kid’s mother, “Well, you can always have more children,” as the animal tears her child to death while she watches? Can you put some type of barrier to PREVENT small children from jumping/falling into enclosures where wild animals are housed…apparently not, or this situation wouldn’t have happened in the first fucking place. Can parents manage their children so the kids don’t end up in the baboon enclusure….well, some parents apparently cannot do that, should those parents not be permitted to bring their kids to the zoo? Should we shoot the parents who don’t watch their children closely enough?

I agree with the adage that a person who cannot make a dog sit should not be allowed to have children. Well, people who don’t watch their kids closely enough, especially in such places, shouldn’t have had kids in the first place.
And why didn’t the zoo have double enclosures

Perhaps leaving wild animals in the wild rather than caging them in city zoos for people to gawk at would help. No ape to gawk at in a cage, no cage to fall into.

You just hit the moral nail squarely on its perfectly flat head, my friend! No creature deserves to be caged for the perverse amusement of any other creature. I hate zoos. I’ve always hated zoos even as a child. They are stinking prisons of misery. All anyone need do to see this is look into the eyes of its unfortunate inmates. Their sorrow, humiliation, and rage are readily apparent to any person with compassion.

We can leave wild animals in the wild. But “the wild” is shrinking as I write this…they cut down trees to put up luxury condos, clear the open field in favor of shopping malls, we encroach on the habitat of wild animals because some greedy developer decided it’s “prime real estate & built a housing development instead…should the baboon buy a townhouse, pay a mortgage, & get a 9-5 job because the wild doesn’t exist?

No, they should not. They also should not have to be imprisoned like circus freaks for idiots to gawk at. We need to preserve areas for animals to live in naturally. Locking a gorilla in prison, then killing it because a kid fell into said prison is immoral, disgusting, and vile. And, NOT the gorilla’s fault. Zoos are freak shows, not areas “helping” animals. If we want to help animals, and find we MUST preserve them away from their natural, shrinking, environments in enclosed habitats, then make the habitats PRIVATE. Keep gawkers out, and gawkers falling into said habitats will NOT be an issue. End the freak show. That will end this type of idiocy from happening. RESPECT the animals. Do not imprison them to show them to the masses. In other words, fuck zoos.

Er, where was the dangerous behaviour by the gorilla? There was no aggression. He looked to be trying to help the kid FFS and lift him up out of the water. They are hardly meat-eating polar bears.
Actually. Shoot the parents. But presumably the zoo didn’t want an insurance claim. I mean that is how America works isn’t it?

The circumstances of the situation were pretty awful. That kid shouldn’t have been able to get into the enclosure under any circumstances, let alone being able to wander into the moat like that. The gorilla got shot because they couldn’t keep the animals and people safe.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that blame falls squarely on the zoo for everything that happened. It shouldn’t be allowed to operate under such appalling conditions.

It’s actually about both. Don’t get me wrong: you’re right about the decision to shoot based on liability for the kid. But I’m saying that liability for the kid was just the last item on a long list of items that should have started with maintaining safe premises.
Whether the gorilla was aggressive or not is immaterial to their decision. And that entire state of events is terrible. But hey, it’s fun to take the kids on a trip to see real live wild caged animals in an artificially natural habitat.
But that’s an entirely other rant that I’m trying to avoid.

The gorilla didn’t need to be aggressive to be a danger to the child. That child was going to die if the gorilla didn’t because of how it was being dragged about and controlled.

the enclosure is 3.7m high. How is it no one saw him go up? It is awful how this all happened.

None of the stories I read was clear on how the child got through the enclosure. While there’s always the potential for parental negligence in situations like this, the fact remains that the child never should have been able to get over, through, under, or around it.
They build these zoos to maximize the curiosity of children, so it’s a no-brainer that kids would want to find ways to get closer.

Can’t click “like” cause I don’t like animals in zoos. With one exception, if they’re being saved/rescued. They killed the gorilla and earlier two lions because they’re dangerous. What idiot came up with that sound bite? Of course, they’re dangerous and that’s the problem with caging wild animals. Leave them be where they belong and leave them alone. Us humans are more dangerous than they are with all our stupid senseless killings. You know me, the animal lover to a fault, couldn’t keep my nose out of this one. If it was a PR measure to avoid being sued then even that is still ridiculous. People go to zoos and know the animals are dangerous, it’s written their cages and anyone with half a brain knows that they are. Enough from me, breathe breathe breathe.
That aside, have a good Sunday. ๐

I didn’t answer your question. It hit a nerve and I went off on that tangent. I don’t know what I would have done, what my impulse would have been to try to “protect” the little boy. And that’s being honest. What a terrible situation.

I’ll just add to others as I’ve arrived later; don’t cage any animals to ‘save’ them ffs, and don’t be such a poor parent as to let your child get as far as being able to get onto such an enclosure. The whole thing make me spike with fury.
The answer to your question? On the one hand the animal did not ‘deserve’ death, therefore on that basis should have been tranquilized, not condemned to death, and the parents had some kind of social services loom heavily into their fucking parenting capabilities (pardon esme’s French). Yet in reality, the animal is living a very poor life indeed cooped up in there, so against all the apparent odds is probably better off dead, though that in no way justifies the way humans have ruined its life and murdered the poor sod.

Stupid for the kid.
The gorilla got a new toy and was killed for it.
I’m afraid though the choice to shoot was correct. More time with the gorilla the kid could be dead.

That would have been awesome. Thing is though that gorilla could have squished the kid, as easily as you or I would squish an ant. Even if they were wonderful friends.
It is a risk I dont’ think any parent would be willing to take. Even if the ignorant kid deserves a Darwin Award.
