I don’t think his action qualifies ua question. He is not catholic church himself. He is just one among many n his actions doesn’t define us. If an atheist rapes or murders at will, will u quit atheism?

But is it the same thing? My lack of belief in gods isn’t based on the actions of others who lack belief in gods. But Catholicism teaches that the Christ’s authority extends down through the priesthood.

Your challenge would be a difficult one to respond to if that were the point I attempted to make. I didn’t ask why people are still Catholics because the priest embezzled funds. People embezzle funds everyday everywhere. I want to know why in this day and age someone should still be religious

My mother is not angry that my maternal grandfather raped me, but rather she’s angry at me for having SAID he raped me…I’m at fault for not having kept my mouth shut about what he did.
The archbishop in this instance is not angry that the priest embezzled funds & had improper relationships, but rather he’s angry at the parishioners for finding out & speaking out about their priest’s bad behavior. Yeah, I don’t get why people are still catholics either.

That’s the strange part. That what for the bishop is wrong is that they spoke about it

The priest is wrong for embezzlement and the inappropriate sexual relationships he had; the bishop is wrong for not condemning the priest, and wrong again for condemning those who spoke out against the priest. The Catholic Church has many within it who either actively do wrong or who condone the wrongdoing of others.

For embezzlement yes. For his sexual relationships- that should be his business. At least in this case it doesn’t involve underage boys or girs

At this point in time, there should merely be great shame in saying one is Catholic. Time and time again, the Catholic Church shows us that it is a breeding ground for pedophiles and those who cover up and hide pedophiles. Simply disgusting. Embezzlement, pedophilia, lying, denial of crimes against children, more lying, more denying, more blaming the victims-this needs to end. Dissolve the Church. Distribute its great wealth to the victims of its crimes, and end this despicable monster once and for all.

Well said.
And if not, they should start at least by ending the celibacy lie

Apparently, they have. That is in regards to pedophilia at least. Child rape is obviously a far lesser sin to the Catholic Church than, say, two grown ups having unwed, consensual sex is. Funny priorities they have in that Church. Very funny indeed.

He was right who said the church has little problem with a thief than with ideas that challenge its dominance. Embezzlement and sex in its ranks doesn’t bother it much

When my mum was young the Irish Catholic priests (so she says) ran all gambling in Brisbane.

When I was still a catholic I used an argument similar to okuodo (the first commenter); “the church is in the fallen world and therefore one can expect sin and bad things to happen there.” Once again that’s a get-out-of-jail-free card the religious use anytime the church gets itself in trouble. Now that I’m an atheist that argument holds no water with me. The church should fucking PAY for the wounds it has inflicted on it’s people and on the world. With devout christians blindly protecting it though, I doubt it will ever happen.

Not in the next several years. But someday it will come falling like a house of cards if not a sand dam

People are still Catholics because they are masochists.
Just kidding… or, maybe not… lol!
