When does a cultural practice become harmful

The BBC has this story about Malawi that is disturbing for two reasons

1. How it treats women

2. The risk/ danger it poses to the society

About makagutu

As Onyango Makagutu I am Kenyan, as far as I am a man, I am a citizen of the world

I know I should not be surprised by such things, but I find myself gasping in horror. This man has AIDS and is used to “sexually cleanse” women of all ages, including girls who’ve had only one menstruation? I mean, WTF? I guess they’ve never considered *verbal* sex ed as a way to inform girls of “how to please their husbands.” Jesus fucking christ, what a messed up world we live in.

A cultural practice becomes harmful when it violates the personal rights and autonomy of others.
