I think heroes are people who do extraordinary things in extraordinary circumstances, putting their own lives in jeopardy to help another.
That can cover a lot of ground.
I saw a video of a guy who went under to get a woman out of a sinking car in flood waters. He got her out fine, then the woman complained about her dog still in the car. The guy went back and got the damn dog.
That was a case of being a hero and an idjit within moments.

Perhaps, if the animals stopped coming… But they never stop coming.

if they stopped coming you’d be overjoyed because it would mean others have stopped being cruel but it wouldn’t diminish your happiness on the ones you rescued

I don’t think you can call it “happiness.” There is some relief, when it works, for the animal, but no pleasure because it was something that should never should have occured in the first place.

Well, let’s call it relief. It allows you to sleep well at night and that, my friend, is a big reward

Many people find it offensive and unfathomable when I say we can’t act if we don’t stand to gain. In my view their understanding of gain seems to me to be quite limited to recognition or money. They do not count things like peace of mind, clear conscience as even bigger gains. Take these out and no one will act. It is not to make men and women less heroic or diminish our humanity but to try to question that very humanity. What is it that drives us? When you begin questioning the gods, nothing can stand without question.

Hero is a social construct historically designed to manipulate a certain sector in society into taking on jobs that would normally be rejected. Soldiers, for example, are automatic heroes.

And policemen and firefighters. I think you are right.
The military churns out heroes by the droves, and the highest accolade goes to them that kill the most lives.

Here is a post I wrote about the subject of heroes in case anyone is interested.
Personally I think a hero is someone who risks personal gain for the benefit of others while causing the least amount of harm along the way to achieve that goal.

Isn’t that something, Mak? There you are, on your side of the world, discussing heroes and here I am on another side, having just taught a lesson using political cartoons – on heroes. 🙂
