If we don’t tame religion, it will be the end of us

Soyinka was talking of Nigeria but I think his comments apply equally to anywhere else in the world where there are religious people.

“I do not say kill religion, though, I wouldn’t mind a bit if that mission could be undertaken surgically, painlessly perhaps, under anaesthesia, effectively sprayed all over the nation or perhaps during an induced pouch of religious ecstasy.

“We may never prosecute anybody for killing in the name of religion precisely because we have been unable to separate criminality from religion.

I have said for years that religion, or climate change, is going to kill us, & right now, I think religion is ahead.

Education is the key. Teach people to think critically and the most harmful aspects of religion will fade away, though it will take some time.

I think the type of education we receive has not prepared most people to think through their religious beliefs

True, hence my remark regarding critical thinking. Without that specific objective education is just another word for brainwashing.

I would like to introduce a substitute for brainstorming. There don’t seem to be dictionary entries for “brainforming”, but I hope you will agree that it is easily understandable as an earlier phase, and perhaps doing more damage because it finds practically zero brain capacity to criticize.
The title of this post, on the other hand, suggests a parallel with the expected “political climate change” of the USA, and consequently that of the whole world.

    I agree on both counts.

Religion is the antithisis of reality.
