The idea of “god’s own country” is an intriguing one, as many countries make this claim. In my forthcoming novel I make fun of that idea, by having a nation calling itself literally “God’s Country”.

All the leaders finish their speeches asking God to bless their countries only and no others. It is intriguing as you say

I believe late Dutch international football player Cruyf once remarked that if both teams pray before a match and it should be effective, then all matches should end in a draw.

I am inclined to agree unless god has favourites

If your wish is within God’s Plans, prayer is useless.
And if it is not, prayer is futile.
This explanation is similar to the one given by the young boy when he, invited by a friend to lunch, replied why his family did not pray before meals:
My mother is an excellent cook.

How can a person who does NOT believe in something, be subversive? I thought it was just the other way round. Allright, I would never succeed in becoming an ambassador, to the UN. Or to any nation, for that matter.

You’ll never hear a New Zealand politician of any persuasion invoke the blessings of God. Being re-elected and asking God for support are mutually exclusive.

You’re going to have to join the queue, which is getting longer all the time. It’d be easier to get in via an industry or profession with a labour shortage 🙂

Now if only the labour shortage includes architects and engineers then I should be on my way

Some types of architects and engineers are in short supply. The Christchurch and subsequent earthquakes have seen a need for specific skills in the construction industry that are still in demand although I’m not sure of the details.

It is embarrassing that these punishments are carried out by apparent ‘adults’. It shows age and wisdom don’t always go hand in hand.
