wise sayings

by Zera Yacob, philosopher (1599-1692)

on fasting and absconding certain foods for religious ends

God does not order absurdities such as ‘‘Eat this, do not eat this; today eat, tomorrow do not eat, do not  eat meat today, eat it tomorrow. . . neither did God say to the Mohammedians: ‘eat during the night, but do not eat during the day.’ ’’

human beings are all equal because they are all endowed with intelligence and are fated to die.

Truth occurs only when all persons agree on a given matter or value.

On obligations

Thus, the first foundational obligation of human beings is to love others as you would yourself, and not to do to others what you would not do to yourself.

On men

‘‘There are four kinds of men. The person who knows and teaches, he himself being educated: he is a scholar; ask him questions and learn from him. The person who knows and does not teach, although he is a scholar: he is intelligent; remember him. The person who does not know but teaches: he is in need of guidance; teach him and guide him. The person who does not know and does not want to learn: he is a fool; keep away from him.’’

On wisdom

Wisdom is not good if the action is not good.

On sorrow

Sorrow is of two kinds. One type is that of conscience: the rational soul becomes sad out of lack of knowledge. The animal soul feels sorry out of lack of food and drink and the like.

The maxim: ‘do not do to others what you would not do to yourself’ is premised on the selfish assumption that everyone should feel and think and act the same as me. I wouldn’t, for example, try to run the marathon but I would’t insist others shouldn’t try if they felt like it.

I have just found out I have an abcessed tooth, which explains a lot about how Ive been feeling of late. A couple days on antibiotics and I can feel the fog and the excessive tiredness lifting. Had a crown pop off, then the packing came out the next night, exposing some damn wires, one of which protruded itno my tongue area, it was a grand fun time I tell ya. Then found out the tooth underneath was busted, its gonna hafta come out.

…and I keep having these overwhelming urges to strangle our president.

Other than that I am well sir 🙂 How have you been?

If you should get close to strangle him, let me know how you did it. I want to kill ours and the entire political class.

Get your tooth checked. Toothaches are some of those annoying pains we go through life. Even food doesn’t taste the same.

I have been well, mate. I am tired of our government but apart from that, I am keeping well, imagining freedom. Daring to dream

Sick of our governments? We are brothers 🙂

Been to the dentist, he used a dremel (dentists dremel thingy) to cut back those wires that were causing me great discomfort, my tongue is still sore and swollen where it kept getting poked by one of those damn wires. Been on antbiotics for 3 days now.

If I come down there and help you overthrow your gov’t, will you help me with mine? 😉 I swear I want to get my own island and call it Saneville.

I have been in denial for MONTHS because I have an irrational fear of the dentist. I have a bad tooth.

You are all inspiring me to make the dreaded call for an appointment on Tuesday. It is so irrational

But I don’t think the problem is necessarily or primarily “the government”.

It’s the population. The United States has gone through vicious spasms of anti-immigrant furor for 200 years. One reality is immigrants DO take “our jobs”. Often because they are willing to work harder and more cheaply. When you have an economic system based on exploitation and devil take the hindmost and screw everyone else, competition is frightening. Throw in good ol’ fashioned racism and religious bigotry, a hollowed out economy that only rewards the clever and connected, and a bad recession some parts of the country have never recovered from…and you get Donald Trump.

It’s terrifying. People I like and work with are utterly heartless and lacking in empathy.

there’s something curious about these rich fellows. you’re likely to find them opposing immigration while at the same time fighting unions, better pay for workers and at the same time, they move their functions to tax havens or places where regulations are lax. Profit at all costs
