Random thoughts 
I’m old enough to remember when there were still 3 popular theories about the nature of the universe: the Big Bang, The Steady State, and the Pulsating Universe, if I remember correctly. That would have been in the late 1950s/early 1960s.

“While you were around” past tense? Do you know something that I don’t? I plan to emulate my parents, grandparents and great grandparents and to make it beyond 90, so there’s at least another 21 years left in me yet ๐
I guess there have been a few changes over my lifetime, but I doubt that they would be as big as those experienced by my parents’ generation.

In Africa, the 50s and 60s saw the struggle for independence ( a struggle yet to be won). Did such news get to your backyard?

Until my mid to late teens my interests lay in science and technology, not politics, so any memories of African steps to independence are incomplete at best. What I do recall is the all too frequent rise of dictatorships and the increasing reports of abuses under the apartheid regime in South Africa and a similar development in what was then Rhodesia. However Africa was a long way away and we were more concerned about developments to our north west, especially the spread of communist ideology in south east Asia. NZ had been involved in the Korean war, then the Malay uprising, then in the Malaysia/Indonesia standoff and then in the Vietnam war. There was a fear that without intervention, south east Asian nations would fall to communism one by one, much like dominoes falling.
The south Pacific has become a nuclear testing zone, by the Americans and the British and later by the French and it was the beginning of the anti-nuclear movement and the anti- apartheid movement, both of which had supporters who had a tendency to turn peaceful protests in violent ones.

In physics we are taught that “for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.” I’ve often wondered, if Big Bang is the actual action, then what is the reaction named? Naked hugs my Kenyan brother!

At the moment of the big bang it’s not clear how well the known physical laws of the known universe would all imply. But if think of the big bang as an exploding bomb, the action is the release of energy, and the reaction is expansion.

The universe came from “The Big Sneeze”. God sneezed and formed the universe from his boogers. Next time you sweat, realize, it’s god’s boogers coming outta your pores. ๐

Good read. The author explains things very well. I was however under the impression that the idea that the universe might reverse wasn’t completely thrown out, owing to the discovery of dark matter, which is supposed to provide the necessary gravity to allow for a contraction. That in no way dispute the big bang, only that it might have happened before and might happen again. In the end it in no way matters to me, but I do find the idea that this universe might start over again a more pleasing thought than a future of cold and darkness extending on into infinity. Even the idea that some day everything will be far apart from us that we will appear alone in the universe because we can’t detect any further galaxies makes me kind of sad.
