If Assange is to be believed, and here I am inclined to believe him, it is not.
Google represents American imperialism like no other. It is the biggest surveillance company. It is almost everywhere.
If you use an android phone, google knows where you are every fucking moment even if you opt out of locations & turn your data off.
Assange argues there is so much government in Google & this is not a good thing.
It’s a giant monopoly and a dangerous one at that.
He writes
Google will interpose itself, and hence the United states government, between the communications of every human being not in China. Commodities just become more marvelous; young, urban professionals sleep, work and shop with greater ease and comfort; democracy is insidiously subverted by technologies of surveillance and control; and our present world order of systematized domination, intimidation and oppression continues, unmentioned, unafflicted or only faintly perturbed.
I have felt now for quite sometime that google is dominating almost everything.

If I wanted someone to watch me all the time I’d believe in god. Be hard to go phoneless these days but I’d like to return to the 70’s yo!

Jim, here, believing in god is better. At least the end user of the data collected is god. With Google, it is sold to companies all over the place so one keeps getting ads for Viagra and all😀

Why can’t I be so lucky. I keep getting mortgage adds. So boring…

You should be happy, man. Google thinks you are rich enough to repay a mortgage and that you have no performance issues

I even get ads for member enlargement. Now this would be fine if I have been sending dick pics and Google analytics found it’s a size too small, but I don’t. This is very offensive, if you know what I mean

I get ads for boots, and the 2019 Audi Q3. I like boots. I like Q3’s, but I really don’t need to see the same ads 17 times a day.

I’ve been getting the q3 adds too. They must know something about my bank account that I don’t know. At least in the old days you had a magazine poster out of the deal, but how many q3 screenshots does one need?

Wait for smellavision to come along and you’ll be getting that new car smell shot through the screen.

My olfactory epitheliums are itching for that one. Hope it comes with a ‘disable smells’ button.

My phone has just become INFESTED with ads since the most recent software update. A big mistake to accept it, of course. I have never bought a Mazda, but for some reason the biggest ads come from a local Mazda dealer. Strange and annoying. Ads are now popping up for Las Vegas resorts. I have my own moralistic tinge, and I think Las Vegas is the epitome of everything wrong with modern American Capitalism. I would rather visit a coal mining town full of Trumpalos than that desert whorehouse.
Thankfully no gender-related enhancement ads.

Hahah Brian. This has left me in stitches, esp, your description of Las Vegas

I think we’re about to see the subject framed as: Would you prefer a western company having all this data, or a Chinese company?

That would avoid another possibility of having a decentralized system

Exactly. You simply shift the “question” and the original problem disappears.

But on whether I would prefer a Chinese company or a European/ American one, I hate all forms of manipulation no matter who does it.

But don’t you see, after you’ve switched the question, your concerns are no longer as pressing as they had been (should be).

You can say that. I find imperialism abhorrent no matter who represents it. And the case of China presents an interesting scenario. A government afraid of what people think or will say.
On the other end, we have the lib dems of the west who give you the impression that you are free. Both illusions which at the end of day are bad.

The level of “imperialism” seems to be higher under the benign rule of the people’s party, though. Especially if one is Muslim. (They literally install cameras inside the homes of Uighurs seen attending a mosque or wearing hijab). But I agree with Mak, of course.

The problem in China is a bad one especially the Uighurs. I feel very sad for them and it is a weak state that does that

Yes…the degree of paranoia and control exhibited by the CCP is breathtaking. And, of course we now have the technology to create the mythical Panopticon.
Not to deny that American spy agencies have their own capabilities of surveillance, but the article (mainstream press, but still) on the Uighur situation is stunning.

There was an article I saw not so long ago about the surveillance in china mainland. It was a journalist who wanted to see how long it would take before one is captured by police or something.

I often wondered where all of this information was stored and guarded. Now I know that it is not kept private and secure. Thank you for enlightening me. Now I can simply carve my thoughts onto stone tablets and store them under a fiery bush. No one save the religious faithful would ever look there! 🙂 Naked hugs!

That inspires a question, though…is this information really available? Or does all the data simply get lost? Is mass surveillance beyond basic web browsing history and ad targeting ultimately lost because there is simply too much data?
