    I am finding it increasingly hard in the modern world to separate satire from fact.

    In a simpler time I would have dismissed such a story as a prank, but now I just shrug my shoulders.

      There are many anti-natalists. Those who can but don’t want to have children are among them. They may not just have articulated their reasons as clearly as Benatar

      Additional thoughts to what I wrote earlier; the author of Ecclesiastes in chapter 4 writes

      4ย Next, I turned to look at all the acts of oppression that make people suffer under the sun. Look at the tears of those who suffer! No one can comfort them. No one can comfort those who suffer.ย 2ย I congratulate the dead, who have already died, rather than the living, who still have to carry on.ย 3ย But the person who hasnโ€™t been born yet is better off than both of them. He hasnโ€™t seen the evil that is done under the sun.

      In his book, the myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus asks the same question as kirilov does in the idiot(?) Why not kill oneself in an absurd life such as we live?
      And one of the oracles notes it is better not to be born and the second best is to die sooner as Lessing (?) says immediately after the loss of his son.

        Having grown up in an unstable, dysfunctional family where every day brought fresh fears of alcohol-induced abuses, I vowed never to have children of my own unless I could care for them properly. So few people these days exercise such caution that it makes me wonder if our reproductive impulses are largely responsible for the depressing state of the world today.

        What happens to a child raised in misery? Isn’t it more likely that they will develop negative behaviors? What does it say about us that a child comes to resent their own existence?

          I think most people treat having children with a very cavalier attitude. Or could be that the urge to procreate is not always guided by reason but is one of those where nature takes full charge

          My sister has been trying to adopt through the State foster care system. These kids are badly damaged by their parents (including through rampant drug and alcohol abuse during pregnancy!). It has not gone well. One kid was violent and highly sexualized (at age 8!) and they decided they could not help him. A future serial killer I fear.

          I know that people have the human right to reproduce, but so many should not. A few should maybe lose that right, even though that is a policy with horrible histories.

            Kudos to your sister. State control over human reproduction is politically impossible in democratic systems, and rightly so; but, that doesn’t mean government is powerless. Education has proven effective for controlling the spread of STD’s, and it could also be effective for family planning. Unfortunately, public education is under assault in America from an array of hostile interests including laissez-faire capitalists and religious conservatives.

    He’s taking “freedom of choice” to it’s “logical” conclusion. He might be able to argue that, regardless of whether or he is an anti-natalist.

    On the other hand his argument for anti-natalism is rather week. His argument that there is no point to humanity could equally apply to every other species on the planet.

    And even without humans, other species will still experience suffering – just it won’t be caused us. Perhaps he should extend his logic and fight to ensure all living species can not reproduce. As humans are possibly the only species capable of executing such a plan, out of necessity, we will have to be the last species around to ensure the task is completed absolutely.

      The argument here is while other animals experience suffering as we do, only us know that our suffering is mostly in vain.

          In trying to answer the problem of suffering, some theologians and Christians have argued that suffering is for character formation.

          And some, like Mary Baker Eddy, of first church, scientist, have done away with suffering altogether, arguing that all suffering is in the mind. We think about things that happen to us and as such bring suffering on ourselves.

            Perhaps I should sue Raphael Samuel. Until I read about him it had never occurred to me that my suffering was pointless. Mind you, it hadn’t occurred to me that there might be a purpose in my suffering either. I just accepted suffering occurred. But now that I’ve been made aware that there is no point to suffering, I’m not happy about it, so I’ll use him.

            Oh, wait. It was you that posted the image of the newspaper article. It’s your fault that I’m now aware my suffering is pointless.

            Perhaps we can settle this out of court…

                I’m the the one who’s now suffering pointlessly. Previously I was just suffering. I demand compensation for the pointless information. Do you understand how much anguish I feel about bringing children into this world only to experience pointless suffering.

                Come to think of it, you provided me with information I did not want to know. Maybe I can also sue you for impinging on my freedom to choose not to know. I think I need to talk to my lawyer.
