It’s situations like these that make it blatantly obvious what a human story religion is. When uncertainty, suffering, and hopelessness mount. When your fate seems or is out of your control what is there left to do but get lost in a fantasy to distract you from the reality of your situation. It’s just escapism and is a well documented psychological phenomena.

Here in the states they stockpile food and weapons because they know gods dependability.

Yes but many of the same people have been blessed by God to be able to afford to stockpile food and weapons. I feel like there is a lot of crossover between the apocalyptic mind and religiosity.

It helps to believe conspiracy theories. Another tendency of the right.

I want a conspiracy theory to believe in. I feel so left out

My mother in law (devout catรณlica) told us the other day to keep an extra eye on the kids when they play outside. Bigfoot is actually alien and beaming children up into his spacecraft and that is where missing kids are. Really I think she has to do this to ignore the horrors of human trafficking and the boogie man is a convenient scapegoat out of her control, but thereโs a conspiracy for you to believe.

Let me think through this. I need a theory so outrageous that to believe it, one must almost be thought insane. And I don’t want the flat earth type. Not interesting anymore

You past up your opportunity for delusion when you un-catholiced yourself by thinking. Youโll have to sit this one out on the fringe.

I think such a crossover can be inferred when one looks at some of the religious movements of the past

Stockpiling weapons seems to be a good strategy. Maybe they can overthrow the government

Hope sells, man and that’s what these churches are doing.
The more dysfunctional a society is, the more religious we expect it to be

I never thought about that and is probably why religion, especially nut case varieties, are on the rise. Good point

In neighbourhoods where people are so poor, you find so many churches.

I indeed hope that all their essential needs will be met. This is a tragedy that they are having to endure. However, we know that any faith is not the way to restore their basic necessities. Unfortunately, leadership in the USA is ignoring the situation there. They are too concerned with the content of the Mueller report! Naked hugs!

DAMN Washington Post! They won’t let me in. This has been going on for quite some time now … they keep wanting me to “subscribe” before they’ll allow me to read anything on their site. Apparently they have set limits to how many times you can access their page(s). SUCKS!
Anyone else experienced this? If so, do you have a workaround?

Same with me. Try Googling the article title on your own. That’s worked for me before.

Yeah … sometimes that works. But not always. And also, as in this case, Mak didn’t provide the article title so all you can do is click on the link … and get shut down!

Short of electricity, food and water, Venezuelans return to religion

Thanks, Mak. Had to access it from another news source, but at least I got to read it.
It’s mind-boggling how these people, who cannot afford food or find clean water, somehow think an invisible and mute being is going to make it all better. But I suppose comfort resides in the “soul” rather than in the stomach.

God will come through for them, maybe. When the state fails, it is the gods people turn to

yes, they set limits since it costs to do journalism.

I did subscribe for awhile..reasonable price, but just backed off since so many other places report the same stories. I donโt know of a way around.

If gods actually showed up and helped in emergencies I’d do more to support them.
Might even go to church.
Good thing it will never happen, I don’t care much for church.

the gods might not come but the knowledge that they have heard their pleas is enough for those praying
