And more evidence that Christians depend on lies and willful ignorance to cling to their religion. as for why there are so many creationists in the US, we have a lot of literalists and they buy into the whole “we’re ever so special” bullshit that Christianity and nationalism create.

This is even worse than willful ignorance. This is fighting contrary evidence. For a country that, as Trumpsky tells us, is the greatest you do have many religious loonies

oh hell yes we do. They lie and cheat and ignore their supposed wonderful divinely given morality.

We were largely FOUNDED by religious loonies. Along with dissolute younger aristocrats, slave traders, land speculators, genociders, and frauds.

It’s too bad we can’t hide bibles and religious nonsense for hundreds of years the way these idiots hid that fossil. We’d have a much more learned world without idjits like Ken Ham mucking up reality with his nonsense. The US is a fertile ground for these idjits. I’m very embarrassed to be a citizen here at times.

it would be a great invention if we could hide bibles & other religious material just for a decade. They would have to come up with something reasonable

It’s not difficult to be a yec. Not at all. You just have to plug your ears and block your eyes from everything that contradicts the bible. Apologetics orgs help immensely in this regard as they aren’t really dedicated to answering objections from outsiders but intended to lock the doors from the inside to keep believers blind and deaf.

I think most of the religious people I know are likely to be creationists of some kind or other

Fear is the key. Ignorance feeds fears. Our greatest fear is always the unknown and by naming stuff people have learned to manage their fear. If one can name strange looking and therefore scary “other” people and frame them by their skin colour, or some equally arbitrary method, one may feel like in control of a situation they would otherwise feel too affraid to handle. Why would anyone fear the stranger so much? Well, of course because they do not have the mental tools to face any new stuff.
Religion is a money making pyramid scheme and in order for it to have a position within a society, it needs to feed the ignorance of people, because contrary to what one would think, it is the ignorant people who do not ask questions. It is the people who already understand that what we do not know, may be beneficial and not at all something to be affraid of.
Ignorance also feeds a system where freedom means the right of few to exploit the many, so there are many interrests at play when a nation spends all of it’s money rather on weapons, than on healthcare, or education and those interrests also serve any religion, that tells people there is an all-merciful and all-just deity, that provides for people according to what they deserve, if not in this life then AFTER they die. So, poverty is not the result of some extremely rich and powerfull being selfish and some fairly well off being indifferent of the suffering of others, but a just punishment for the lazy, or only a temporary situation for some good people who will be rewarded for their suffering.

Fear does work for religion especially for the bank accounts of pastors and other parsons.
Ignorance is a disease. It’s one of humanity’s major scourges. It fuels so many disasters- racism- to just name one.

While we sit back and enjoy the show, Turkey has begun an ethnic cleansing of the Kurds, the most necessary allies of the US in the fight against the ISIS. Trump has the audacity to make the claim, that the US does not owe anything to the Kurds, because they did not help the US troops during WWII. I wonder, if my homecountry Finland was invaded by Russia tomorrow, would Trump simply ignore our pleas for help, by saying that we deserve it because our grandpas did not help the US war effort in WWII. He could use the same excuse even on some NATO countries like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, or even Denmark for that matter.
Even if the US owed nothing to the Kurds for fighting the ISIS (and they do – big time), would they not owe it to the Kurds for humanity sake to pressure their Turkish allies not to invade and destroy the lives of thousands of people who have only recently been released from the threat of ISIS?
Even the head secretary of NATO Danish Stoltenberg went on to say, that NATO recognizes, that Turkey has some serious safety issues within the area. Thus sanctifying the invasion. Ethnic cleansing is always justified by “safety issues”. Nazi Germany could have said that they had every right during WWII to invade Denmark, because they had some serious “safety issues” with Denmark, that could have presented a Bridgehead for British invasion and supported it by their own military.
In a matter of hours the modern Turkish army can destroy the lives of thousands, and in a matter of days drive the Kurds from their ancestral land and create enormous amounts of new refugees.

Fashionablefaiths have been messing with science to dumb down the population, half the doctors now believe the strangest things.
