Why is it so

Difficult to forget?

The things I want to intentionally forget keep coming back and those that I would like to remember just disappear.

Is there a means of improving forgetfulness?

Well, I don’t know of a way to enhance forgetfulness, but if you find out, I hope you’ll share it with us.

  2. I think the “why” is that whether a memory is retained or lost is heavily controlled by a subcortical brain region called the hippocampus. The operations of that region appear to be non-conscious, and the conscious parts of us seem to only have limited ability to influence it.

I submit that forgetting things you’d like to remember indicates you’ve already mastered the art of forgetfulness; so I can’t help you there. But as to advice on being able to remember things, I’ve found that writing things down immediately in an easily accessible place (like a notebook, or a calendar app, or a “to do” list) and reviewing it frequently helps jog my memory.

One of many of the inexplicable quirks of human nature, O Exalted One! We absolutely MUST remember all that we’d love to forget! Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂 Naked hugs!

  5. Prayer. Prayer is the answer to everything, my friend. Prayer. Really. Prayer. I mean it, OK. I’m NOT joking. Really. OK, I’m joking. Prayer is useless. Now let me say what I originally meant to say….Wait! I forgot what I originally wanted to say! Don’tcha HATE when that happens!!

I recently had a really bad experience with anesthesia that I would really love to forget. Instead of being nicely relaxed for the procedure, which is what I expected, I was sent into a full-blown hallucinatory delirium of a bad trip. Almost every brain system I had was seriously malfunctioning. Except memory. The one thing I wanted shut down worked really really well, and I can’t stop remembering the nightmare of the experience. If I figure out how to forget, I’ll let you know. Except then I probably won’t remember that I need to tell you, because I will have forgotten. Whatever that drug was they gave me (probably ketamine), I don’t recommend it for inducing forgetfulness. Try anything else.

You are getting only a taste of what is to come! I go into the kitchen for a pack of cigarettes. I wipe down the counters, see a dish that needs to be put into the dishwasher, notice the kittie’s dishes are empty, so I feed them, then I come back to my chair and reach for a … DRAT! Go back into the kitchen for a pack of smokes, notice that the water is dripping … well, you get the picture! Old age is great joy! Not.

  9. I wish there were a better way to forget. I have a very good memory, not photographic but close. I remember every bad thing that ever happened like it was happening right now. And then I can’t ever get over it. Not fun. Alcohol seems to work, at least temporarily. 🙂
