I agree with Makau Mutua on the matter but find this
Let’s separate man-made religious law from holy text. In the Church, canonical law are rules made by ecclesiastical authority, or Church leadership, for the governance of the flock. It shouldn’t be confused with the Bible. In the same way that sharia or Islamic law shouldn’t be conflated with the Quran and the Hadith. Sharia is man-made law even if the religious authorities and scholars derive it from the Quran and Hadith. That’s why using canonical law or sharia law to deny penitents basic rights of equality can’t stand scrutiny.
indefensible. Is holy (sic) writ not equally work of men? And does this claim not weaken his argument? In the NT, women are told to keep quiet in church. How then would he justify having women priests when the bible forbids it? Paul says marry only if you can’t control your urges.
Anyone with some time in their hands should read William Cussel’s supernatural religion.
I think he would make a stronger argument if he argued that holy writ is work of men. The rules can be changed.
Honestly, I don’t care if the vatican allows either married men or women or both to be ordained. The rcc and any other religious group should be free to decide who they ordain or not. People who disagree are similarly free to set up their own groups.

There are some bishops and priests who have quit to get married and started their own shows. I think the catholic should keep doing its thing until it dies a natural death like other religions

A few days ago I read a quote (supposedly) from Napoleon: never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake. So let the catholic church destroy itself. No outside intervention is required, given the ongoing feud between “traditionalists” and “modernists”.

Also it was an increasing shortage of priests, so if that trend continues…

I was thinking much the same thing. If the church wants to survive, and hold on to its membership, then it needs to adapt, and having married priests might be a good part of that. But I don’t want the church to survive, I want it to implode and collapse under its own weight. So I’m happy to see them crack down, because every crackdown on tradition they do means fewer butts in the pews every week.

i am convinced you and Mordanicus have it right. No need to stop an enemy when they have pressed the self destruct button

Well, kinda hard for priests to be married and diddle little kids, ya know. The spouse might not like it. Like Popeye once said to his barber, Beverly Boobybouncer, “Bev, if yer gonna diddle little kids, don’t get married. Eventually yer gonna get arrested cause yer a perv, and yer spouse ain’t gonna likes it!”

Live and let live. If those denied a sacrament elect to leave the religion – the go and be happy. In the end, it really makes no difference. We all die anyway. 🙂 Naked hugs!

What is the harm in letting women, if they feel called to the priesthood go ahead and do it? There were women priestesses in the Bible.

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. (NIV, 1 Timothy 2:11-12)
But in the Old Testament women were priestesses and prophetess. Christianity is regressive.

Catholicism is a very old religion, and like it or not, it’s been around for 2 miilennia, give or take a few. It’s hard to let that go. My big fear is the possible destruction of all the artwork, the churches, the music, ‘just because’. It’s happened before, in earlier cultures, when the new religion just took over and destroyed what had been before.
For 1600 years artitsts and musicians and story tellers thrived under the aegis of Royal and/or Church approval, and when that started to wane, so did the arts. It may seem a small thing, but I think the world would be a smaller, sadder place, without the work of Michaelangelo, and Titian, and Bach.
People do strange things.

Christianity destroyed the Classical World and tons of art, sculptures, writings and manuscripts that we will never know about..
That was a great loss, so I agree with you, Judy. Art is for the sake of art alone and history.
But I’m all for all religions going away…

I suspect, like it or not, there will always be a religion or two floating about, simply because there will always be people who need to be told what to do and how to do it.
People are what they are, and some need, while some don’t. This swatch of Christianity will be eventually replaced with a new form of belief, and with any luck none of us will be around to watch it happen. =)

I think you have a point. There will always be a conman somewhere selling hope and paradise.
