    my objection to that quote is personal: I don’t believe in anything but the physical world I see, and inhabit. And yet Im more at peace with myself than I ever was with a religious backdrop. Religion is always reminding you of the open pit of Hell, and how easy it could be to lose the Keys to the Kingdom.
    At least Catholics invented Purgatory, which gave us a kind of time out while friends and family prayed to get their beloved released. And the implication was, no one had a straight ticket to heaven. No. You had to stop in Purgatory to tidy up a bit, and then they’d let you in.
    Even so, it’s no comfort or joy to consider that your favorite aunt, or friend, is probably walowing in Purgatory, nossir.

    addendum: how does one “strive” for peace? isn’t that an oxymoron?

    (Forgive me if I misread that quote: Im no scholar, and sometimes I take things like that too literally)

      The quote is fragment in response to Schopenhauer who seemed to have rejected religion but was taken in by the Upanishads & accepted some idea of soul. So Nietzsche is saying if you are concerned about the soul, then belief(religion) is what you need but if you are concerned with truth, then you must inquire.

      Mark Twain put a damper on this. He said that even those of us who are very skeptical stop searching when we think we have found the truth. I don’t know how true this is

          You ask a good question. Now many clever people have opined on what truth is and i don’t know if they have come to definitive answer. Some have said what is true matches reality. But then, in some way, our reality is limited by our language- since we define reality in language. I don’t know. I am not clever enough to have answer of what is truth.

            You are so right. If Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, and their successors in the field couldn’t come up with an answer, then why should we be able to. But, back to the original point, I think that people stop searching for answers when they hit upon the one that they like the most, the one that is most convenient for them.
