  2. I met Vonnegut at a bookstore in the early 90’s and got his autograph on a book of his called “The Sirens of Titan.” He smoked like a fire and kinda looked a bit devilish himself–kinda like a white, taller Yoda actually. He was rather pleasant, however and didn’t charge for his autograph which was nice.

    Metaphorically he’s absolutely correct.

There was an important job to be done (addressing poverty, disease, racism, hunger, ignorance) and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Isn’t the Devil the personification of Everybody, Anybody, Nobody and Somebody? Our collective non-action is far more harmful than all the deliberate harm that’s been done.

In high school our class (a very small class) was a personification of that attitude, and we wanted “let George do it” as our class motto. We almost got it, except for one vote. It would have summed up everything.

In a way, it still does.
