on covid19 disease and spread

I hope you are keeping safe wherever you are and that hopefully you are not part of the 3 billion humans under some form of lockdown.

I have mentioned the Intercept before as one of those online newspapers that I read once in a while. They have this piece on the spread of the virus around the world and the role Europe played in it

One thought: the theme through much of that article is people returning from Italy, more than anywhere else. Our own ‘first case” here in New Hampshire was a man who had returned from Italy, and was diagnosed almost immediately with it. He more or less did the Ugly American thing, ignored the diagnosis, and went to a meeting the night after, where there were at least 100+ people.

We have been on voluntary quarantine for nearly a month. Most people I know are doing the same. I think it might be one reason why it’s spreading so slowly (but steadily) in the state. We don’t have the ‘southern church’ attitude that god will provide if we pray hard enough,
and we are sensible enough to not want to give it to our neighbors.

My husband put his math skills to work on the computer and worked up a graph of the country at large vs. NH, as to outbreaks and spread. We seem to be mirroring the countrywide graph, but on a very minor scale.

Our first case I think was someone returning from either the UK or the US. Most likely, if we had stopped international travel sooner, maybe there would be no cases here. Who knows.
We have a 7pm to 5am curfew and people are encouraged to stay home so there is little movement. And recently, movement out of and into four counties was stopped.
Our numbers are increasing everyday though in single digits and we are being told by the government that they are from people in quarantine. But I don’t trust the government so I take their figures with a pinch of salt

Excellent article! This stood out to me — The Food and Drug Administration, on the other hand, only allowed a specific Centers for Disease Control and Prevention test in the first few weeks, drastically damaging the U.S.โ€™s ability to contain the pandemic.

Contrary to what our great and wonderful leader says, I agree with the article that the “U.S. is likely to remain a devastating global problem for months and even years to come.”

Somehow I have the (misguided, no doubt) impression that the people who wrote this article actually know what they’re talking about.

  5. I’m not surprised that Europe helped transmit the disease. Once it gets out of the original area of infection, the whole world has to take steps to fight the spread. This pandemic is going to be a harsh lesson to people that they can’t just ignore the rest of the world.

    Stay safe, Mak.
