My good friend Brian persuaded me to read Butler’s War is a Racket and this is one book I would recommend highly especially to believers in “good” wars but that’s not what this post is about.
Butler had 3 suggestions to end war.
1. Remove profit from war- on this point, he added the businessmen, presidents, members of congress who profit from war should be paid the same amount the rank and file are paid for risking their lives. He builds on this in a speech where he talks of these profits as blood money and that generations of Americans (this book was addressed to the American public) will keep paying for the deficit caused by war.
2. Require a limited plebiscite of those who are going to do the dying in war if war should be declared
3. Limit military forces to home defense purposes
He writes in the same book
when our boys were sent off to war they were told it was a “war to make the world safe for democracy” and a “war to end all wars”.
Well, 18yrs after, the world has less of a democracy than it had then. Besides, what business is it of ours whether Russia or Germany or England or France or Austria live under democracies or monarchies?[..] Our problem is to preserve our own democracy.
Truth and falsehood are arbitrary terms….. There is nothing in experience to tell us one is always preferable to the other … The force of an idea lies in its inspirational value. It matters very little if is true or false

While many of my rides are through very beautiful scenery, I hardly stop to take shots because I see them regularly, I ride by fast or most likely I concentrate on the road more than anything else. Following encouragement by Tish, I took a few pics today during a grueling ride through tea farms. I hope you like them.
Note: They are likely out of focus because i didn’t get off the bike to take them.
I am most definitely biased against soldiers and I have a general dislike for police officers. Just to be clear I have cop friends but I think their training (especially here in Kenya) makes them inhuman.
1. They join because they are broke
2. They join because they want adventure
3. They are out of options( have no better job prospects)
4. Are children of higher ups somewhere and have been enlisted because of who they know
5. A false belief that soldiers are heroes
6. Come from a family of soldiers
Did I leave something out?
While on the one hand the stay at home orders have had its toll on me, economy wise, I have put that much time to good use. This month alone I have covered more distance on the bike than I covered the whole of last year and since we are to stay home till June, I might just hit 1500km for May. For me, that will be no mean achievement.
I feel like I have improved a bit on my riding. And I have managed to fall embarrassingly because I forgot to unclip my shoes.
And maybe I should buy sunscreen.
I wish I met this count.
This song by Lord Laro has very cool beats. And his voice!
Enjoy.
