Quotes about war

The man from Mars who saw how men suffered in the last war and how frantically they are preparing for the next war, which they know will be worse, would come to the conclusion that he was looking at the denizens of a lunatic asylum.

Norman Thomas, 1935

And I think he would be forgiven if he came from his grave today and saw how countries are building their armies in the name of self defence. The next war, when it happens( it’s a question of when not if), will be a great war and I don’t know who will be left to write about it.

‘…denizens of the lunatic asylum…’ And those of us who pride ourselves on being denizens of the richest and most ‘civilized’ nations, might find, if we cared to look, that since WW2 our nations have endlessly waged wars, imposed sanctions (the slow death option), regime changed and generally interfered with other sovereign nations. In the process our weapons have killed millions people. Even now, in a pandemic, the war machines rattle on.

Don’t forget-some of the global south nations now have the bomb (Iran, Pakistan). They may not be totally devoted to the West’s God of War, Capitalism, but hard core Islam might inspire some fun in the future, too.

I think the thing about Pinker is context. Given that we are vicious, more aggressive Chimpanzees, I can well imagine that the pre-modern, pre-literate age was one of constant warfare. But it was all small scale because there were not as many of us, our technology was not perfected, and we don’t have a clear written record of the carnage.

My favorite polemic is called WAR IS A RACKET written by an ex-Marine General with an awesome name (to English speaking ears): General Smedley Butler. He spent his career committing war crimes in the Philippines for his paymasters in the corporate world. (That is what our solders do most of the time, isn’t it? How was the Iraq War about my “FREE-DUMB?”
