While on the one hand the stay at home orders have had its toll on me, economy wise, I have put that much time to good use. This month alone I have covered more distance on the bike than I covered the whole of last year and since we are to stay home till June, I might just hit 1500km for May. For me, that will be no mean achievement.
I feel like I have improved a bit on my riding. And I have managed to fall embarrassingly because I forgot to unclip my shoes.
And maybe I should buy sunscreen.
Ooops!

Haha.
The falls lead more to embarrassment than injury

I have this image of you lying on the tarmac underneath your bicycle trying to reach your feet trapped in the pedals.
And then having to pick all the bits of gravel and tar out of your knees once you get home!

You know the drill. When you fall while riding, check if the bike is ok then try if you can ride, you will deal with injuries and gravel later and away from public gaze

Well, I don’t ride , although did have a motorbike at one time.
I never fell off it but I was knocked off it by a delivery van!

I think motorbikes are too dangerous. I have not learnt to ride one.

Oh, I had loads of fun until I was knocked off – T-boned in the middle of an intersection by the driver of a delivery van who has shot the red light.
After that I never climbed in a bike again.

Bravo, Mak. Zooming along the Rift. Can’t think of anything better.

Actually all this has been within Kiambu and Nairobi since we can’t go out of the greater Nairobi

Well – on the Rift foothills then. Kiambu is lovely.

Lovely and especially with the tea farms. Great place to ride

I was thinking of the tea farms. All that deep velvety green up and down the hillsides.

And then there are the waterfalls in between

And probably a lot of water in them after all the rain?

Yeah. Next time I should stop and take a few photos and videos.

Please do. People should see where some of their very fine tea comes from.

I’ve done that, at lights, in traffic, then just floundered there on the road.

That is a lot of miles! Damn! I thought I was obsessive.
We are not supposed to travel, but… At least I have not lemming-like travelled to beaches and other places where all the other infectious vectors are gathering! Nobody is going TO Fresno or Redding like I did.
(Redding is actually a road cycling paradise. At least before the Big Heat hits in the summer. And my excuse for Fresno was to outrun a very unusual late season rain spell!)
I put on a lot of miles, but it has not helped much because my landlady is bored and when she is bored….she cooks. My ice cream addiction remains uncontrolled, too. 😦

I feel you my friend.
I have managed to check my ice cream addiction. I don’t keep any stock in the house and most of my rides hardly ever come close to an ice cream parlour.
Blame the restrictions for the milage. What’s one to do with the tonnes of time in their hands.
I see all the states have partially reopened to business.

We are transitioning back to limited staffing. Which means one day per week I am in the physical office again (today, actually).

I think we have like 2 weeks before we start any of that since the restrictions were extended to 6th June

I wear sunscreen daily whether I go out or not. If I need to go out, I’m prepared. Skin cancer runs in my family.

Last week my skin was chaffing because of sun burns. I will either get a sunscreen or a liner to wear as protection for my arms

Ooooo, not comfortable or even safe these days. Sun is brutal now, & for me as a freckly redhead, I just avoid it where possible & have the sunscreen on when I have to be in the sun. Lucky we’re a small city so trips in the sun are rather short. Hope you protect yourself.

The sun really is brutal. It gets very hot some days. I prefer rainy days. Rather be wet than sun burned

At least wet can be dried off in a minute with a towel…..burn can’t.

It’s 10:15 p.m. so am just winding down the day. We’re doing quite well with flattening the curve here, & we have no cases in our city, so we hope it stays that way. Still doing all precautions though as we’re both high risk.

In the news here, the minister announced that cases in the country have surpassed 1000. There are almost no mass gatherings and places like supermarkets require you to have a mask and wash your hands before you go in & some even give you a pair of gloves to use with the trolleys.

Such a sneaky disease, & so dangerous. I use my scooter for shopping & nobody but me touches it. I wear a clear face shield, rubber gloves, & carry a little sprayer of alcohol to spray my gloves, keypads, etc. When I get home, I unload the groceries, wash my hands with gloves on, remove the gloves, wash again, & put the food away. Then wash again.

My longest bike trip here was from my home to some ponds about 10 km away and back. I collected some interesting algae-water-samples there and then did some microscopic trip through bits of them. Lots of interesting rotifers, cilliates, dinoflagellates etc. I don’t have the time now to do longer bike rides, for reasons you know. Its a combination now of “home office”, taking care of my mother and occasional bike rides in the vicinity.
You definitely should use sun screen. Each time you get a sun burn you are one step closer to getting a skin cancer.

I will get sunscreen and liners especially because i spend so much time on the bike during these rides.

I am really bad about sunscreen. I am relatively dark skinned for a white guy of German and English heritage, and I don’t really burn very often. Thankfully, I have not paid any price yet (age 57!).
Anyway. Three day weekend: 230 miles, 7600 feet of climbing. I can barely walk today! 🙂 🙂

I brought my bike with me to work today. This is my one day “in the office” as we transition back to “open”. It will still be blazing hot, but I will gut it out. Literally, as my gut has been fed too much by my landlady’s NEED to cook. I don’t expect her to feed me at all, but the plates of food arrive late at night-the worst time to eat! Bless her heart, but I need to lose some fat. My brother’s little cardiac incident is a reminder.

The media is already warning of dire “increases in the number of cases” of COVID. As if having mobile testing sites in front of every library or park will not identify more cases??

Same thing here.
There has been mass testing in Nairobi & now today we had 123 positive outcomes
