On truth and falsehood

Truth and falsehood are arbitrary terms….. There is nothing in experience to tell us one is always preferable to the other ā€¦ The force of an idea lies in its inspirational value. It matters very little if is true or false

I will keep this in mind when I am working on my retelling of Gilgamesh.

  2. A lie gets half way around the world while truth is still getting its boots on.

  3. are there facts or not?

  4. Barry says:

It depends on what one considers “truths” and “falsehoods”. And as clubschadenfreude
asks above, are “truths” and “facts” synonymous? I’m not convinced that they are.

The problem is many of our most pressing debates are not easily answered with “facts”. Too many things are matters of opinion, preference, bias, “heritage,” and supernatural beliefs. I was just perusing Rational Wiki and there is a movement in the United States called the New Apostolic Reformation that believes literally that Oprah Winfrey is the precursor to the antichrist. (They are big in Uganda and Kenya, also),. How can one argue “facts” with a “Prophetess” from the NAR who believes she is a Prayer Warrior who rebuked recent hurricanes. (Ineffectively, I might note. But they never call these self-appointed holy nitwits when the prophecies don’t come true. Let alone stoning them to death as the Bible demands)
