Jose Marti quotes

A true man does not seek the path where advantage lies, but rather the path where duty lies, and this is the only practical man, whose dream of today will be the law of tomorrow, because he who has looked back on the upheavals of history and has seen civilizations going up in flames, crying out in bloody struggle, throughout the centuries, knows that, without a single exception, the future lies on the side of duty

Jose Marti, Cuban revolutionary and poet

  1. Barry says:

Duty (blind obedience) is what is required by gods, kings, presidents, countries, popes and religious organisations. I don’t hold much faith in such duty. On the other hand I do feel a duty to compassion, empathy, sharing, care, in other words, a duty to fellow beings and to the environment we share. It’s what sustains me, to which I owe my life, and I feel duty bound to reciprocate.

I don’t think Marti- or for that matter, yours truly- refers to blind obedience when they talk of duty. In this quote, Marti is asking that we walk the unbeaten path- no advantage lies there. And usually you will find on that path, lies a struggle for justice, for peaceful living and more.

Duty means obligation. To whom or to what do we have an obligation? And by what moral authority is such an obligation imposed?
