The original quote appeared to suggest that those who were more passionate about their prejudices and were consistently narrow minded in their outlook won more friends, but I have very few friends. Did I misunderstand Joseph Conrad?

No, you didn’t but generally that’s how most people end up with friends. They hate the same people and agree on a narrow definition of the world

I’ve been told on many occasions that I’m so open minded that my brains are in danger of falling out. It’s been used as a compliment and a criticism in about equal measure đ
The reality of why I have few friends is that aside from the fact that I don’t have a drive to make friends, my inability to read social cues correctly means that not many people want to include me in their social circles. It’s a reality of life for many autistics

I think also as one grows older, you have fewer friends left, which i think is ok

I’m not sure a count oc friends can go into negative numbers. However i do seem to be attending funerals of acquaintances more regularly than in the past
