What do you believe in?

Is a question I get asked occasionally when I say I am not religious. Generally, depending on what I am doing at that precise moment, my response will be drawn from it. For example if we were having beer, I would jokingly say I believe beer is good.

But I don’t think this is the answer they are looking for. The question seems to me to be a loaded one. It does seem, in some sense, that to the believer, my lack of religious belief and by extension god belief, I am devoid of beliefs.

The other implication is, for the believer, all their other beliefs can be explained by their belief in god. That is to say, to the believer, any question would be answered by god and that would seem to be a sufficient answer.

But there is a problem. Whereas we hold beliefs to the degree we believe them true and no more, it is possible we hold unexamined beliefs, false beliefs and so on. And where there is true knowledge, we generally (in common usage) say we know 1+1=2 except for catholics where 1=3, but that’s a debate for another time.

Therefore, in answer to the above question, whoever should want an answer should be specific. I hold many beliefs depending on the weather and what side of the bed I wake up from.

To those who get asked this question, how do you respond?

I only remember getting that question once. And now that I think about it …. the person only wanted to talk about their own beliefs. And have me listen!
I’m not sure what I would have said if there were a sincere discussion.
We/I are more accustomed, more likely to say what we don’t believe.

  3. I believe beliefs create reality. Not necessarily what is actual.

Most believers can’t get past the possibility than a non believer doesn’t believe in “something.” It’s a conundrum for them. They have been so indoctrinated into believing, they can’t seem to grasp that we don’t need what they have…

So they make ignorant assumtions. The atheist just hates god. The atheist just wants to live a life of debauchery. The atheist has x-ian baby BBQ’s… and so on.

Cold, hard, reality, is good enough for an atheist. Fairy tales and invisible friends, we have no need of.

I believe in the Dark Lord Satan, of course. Who personifies the force of entropy which will ultimately, some (only some) physicists believe, destroy everything, if by destroy one means a vast, amorphous sea of fundamental particles. /sarc (LOL)

      “Satan Is Time”

We float in space and follow the pace
of a clock designed by His Will
Satan shall reap what God has sown
      Blackness comes, colors go

You run, you hide but Satan can find the cowards
      that live by His side
The needle rotates, a lie it creates,
but then it stands still and kills
If heaven is here, it will stay here
Hell is a place full of clocks

      Satan is time
      Ο διάβολος είναι ο χρόνος
      Ο χρόνος είναι ο διάβολος

Irreversible time is smooth to the touch
      A reaper disguised as charm
The pace Satan dictates, the music he creates
A cycle of death and death

You run, you hide but Satan can find
the cowards that live by His side, eat from His hand…

We float in space and follow the pace
of a clock designed by His Will
Satan shall reap what God has sown

  7. I believe Christians who believe in Jesus are wrong. He never lived and isn’t “god”. No, I have no “evidence” for this. I have only faith that my belief is true. And, with faith, all things are true. $Amen$

myself, I have faith that slavery and the Middle Passage was a good thing for African Americans because it introduced them to Christianity! Plus, just like the uniquely American prophets said, participation in the Latter Day Saints faith has made them “Whitesome and Delightsome” and thus worthy of membership! Win for everyone!!!

(MEGA SARASTIC HERE FOLKS. But there are many Evangelicals who believe this!!!!!!)

I usually reply something along the lines of “Be specific otherwise I’ll still be info-dumping at Christmas after next.”

We all hold vast amounts of beliefs. Some are based on facts, some are based on experiece, some are rationalised using incomplete information, and some are entirely from our imagination. I believe that is true of everybody regardless of whether they are a fundamentalist Christian or an atheist.

The secret is knowing that beliefs are not set in stone. They change in subtle and not so subtle ways through lifetimes, centuries and millennia.
