this is promising to be interesting

I am reading E. Anthony Rotundo’s American Manhood: Transformations In Masculinity From The Revolution To The Modern Era and the very first paragraph has me hooked. He writes

…….manliness is a human invention. Starting with a handful of biological differences, people m all places and times have invented elaborate stories about what it means to be male and female. In other words, each culture constructs its own version of what men and women are—and ought to be.

E. A Rotunda, American Manhood: Transformations In Masculinity From The Revolution To The Modern Era

and in this age of I feel in the deepest of my hearts that I am a woman, this should be arsenal in their armory. Maybe I have the cart before the horse here, but this is a bold start.

Keep it tuned here for more.

Men are just kept around to do the heavy lifting and the jar opening 😉 That’s my elaborate story.

Otherwise, I’m not sure the women would put up with us for long. Nor would I blame them!

Interesting. But I think you (or the author) are making the same mistake here as the trans activists, Maka. None of us TERF-sympathetic are advocating for rigid gender roles. Such as “manliness”. Hell, I was bullied continuously as a faggy little bookworm and utter non-athlete. But this paragraph seems to deny really physical differences and the reality of SEX. Not gender. SEX. And a 6’5 37 year old who suddenly decides he is “really a woman” DOES have a serious advantage when “xe” claims a right to compete in “women’s powerlifting”.

Ooof. I await the lambasting and shunning.

Actually, on the contrary, there is no question on sex. He is clear that is biological and some people have it once a month some more frequently.
But what manliness is he argues is social. For example dressing, responsibilities and obligations among other things.

      • And that is verifiably true. Obligations, hair, appearance in general, even mannerisms are culturally specific constructs.

And that is what I was saying, also. But that is NOT what trans activists are saying. “A Trans Woman is a Woman” is the slogan of the moment. There was pressure in England to remove the word “woman” from a discussion of maternal policies for pregnancies. One activist claimed xe was having periods and they were miserable and that is why women can’t succeed professionally (which is NOT a very progressive opinion, is it!?) 12 year olds are ENCOURAGED to take dangerous hormones to block puberty until they can decide what sex they are. And if you question this confusion between (culturally defined) gender roles and biological sex, it can be fatal to your career or you can be subject to doxing.

Why do I care? It doesn’t really affect me. Despite my vocal opinions I would not be deliberately cruel to someone. For the same reason I vocally participate in anti-religious communities. In other words, I am not “transphobic” (the accusation of the hour) but simply transkeptical. Just like I don’t believe Jesus murmurs political policies to our evangelical nut cases, I don’t believe a man or a boy can “become a real woman”.

Like the person who only had sex with men, vocally expressed pride in her (female) physiology, expressed horror at the thought of surgery or hormones. But by gawd, this person was a “Gay Man”.

It’s trendy. And it makes people feel…unique and special. It’s also part of the group identity/culture of therapy/eternal victimization schemata that has, pace tiledb, led to Nazis adopting the same ideology for their white supremacist victim status.

I understand the trendy part but why must they insist on erasing the woman sex? It’s crazy if you ask me

Wow. You nail it. THAT is the big question, actually. Dig too deeply into the Trans movement, and the misogyny becomes too apparent. Many Trans Activists dismiss women’s issues as not important. THEY, (the trans) are the true victims. Their suffering is legendary versus the privileges of “cis women” (funny how lefty “activists” can use damning stereotypes and pejorative terms with no consequences)

There is a victimhood Olympics that sometimes i want to sit out. I know i have no dog in this fight, but can we be at least realistic.

“Victimhood Olympics”. I like that! It seems to utterly dominate political discussion on the left. Meanwhile, we have climate change, we have automation and A.I. which will destroy millions of jobs. we have looming environmental collapse. We have the rise of authoritarian states like China, Iran, and Russia. But the only issue that matters for some on the left is whether a teenager who has been bullied at school should be given hormones and the right to use the “correct” restroom. Or whether a school should be named after a long dead politician who once did or said something not good by modern standards*

                  * Note: There are BAD people who should not be memorialized. To hell with every CONFEDERATE name or statue. Traitors and slaveholders, all.
