Rights to have rights

Hannah Arendt wrote this in one of her journals and there have been critical works written on this subject. Why are we talking about rights today? There is that small matter of escalating violence between Israel and Palestine which from where I sit looks almost like a full scale war. There is however the disturbing question of the sovereignty of the Palestinian state. Of the 193 members of the UN only 178 recognize the State of Palestine. Had the rockets and bombs flying across the two borders between Israel and Palestine, been flying say between Europa and Oceania, there would be some sort of Int’l action, first for both sides to deescalate the violence and negotiate a ceasefire or something. When does the fighting stop?

Maybe some day the Israeli and Palestinians will come to an agreement that getting killed or killing over a mosque/ temple/ synagogue or trying to resolve land ownership granted by divine right through bombs is absurd. I mean, if one side thinks they were given the parcel of land by god, why not invoke the same god to make the boundaries clear so no more people have to die? This should be possible, no? But maybe this is being ambitious.

Maybe there should be a right not to be bombed. And it should apply to all; state actors, non-state actors and whoever has in their minds to drop bombs on civilian targets.

Meanwhile we watch as people die on both sides.

  1. This is why I’m proud to an American where bombing, violence, war, racial injustice, bigotry, meaningless and partisan battles over ridiculous ideologies and land ownership died out centuries ago. Here, we embrace all peoples, love our differences, abhor war and violence, and have such deep empathy toward those we see as different than ourselves that the entire world weeps in envy at our peaceful, loving and harmonious way of life. Ah, if only the rest of world could be so grand! 🙂

I truly like America. The grandee of grand. The place where police can kill you at a regular traffic stop, or you can be killed in a mass shooting at a birthday party or if you are very lucky while going to school. I can’t wait for my green card to the land of opportunity where no one is poor anymore

      • Only poor people here are the lazy bastards who CHOOSE to be poor, and, once I become Emperor of America, I’ll have those fuckers gassed and cremated so America can TRULY be a home of the free and brave. 🙂

Sadly, our doctrine of Full Spectrum Dominance means that you don’t even have to come to our Blessed Shores to receive the blessings of our glorious attentions. But, in the pursuit of incremental profits for hedge funds and wall street vampires, we have off-shored much of our manufacturing expertise to Asia so the likelihood of us winning future big wars is minimal. Learn Mandarin, folks. Our new Han overlords may be even scarier than their American predecessors, but at least they are semi-competent???

  2. In this case, both religions are worshipping the same God and a similar belief structure, so they must prove to each other and to their God who is the more convincing believer, so their God may grant them the bigger favours. At this moment it is obvious who is carrying Gods favour, but as we all know history does not provide predictable outcomes.

This is where it seems the outcome doesn’t depend on who has the better god rather who has the better weapon. Or maybe better weapons imply better god

Looks like the “diversity is our strength” mantra has failed to take root in the Middle East.

  4. Jina Bazzar says:

Every one is entitled to their opinion and beliefs. But, dude, check your facts. This is a one-sided war, and the fight is not over the land “God gave”, it’s fighting so owners of homes don’t get evicted just because someone else wants their home.

    • makagutu says:

So tell me, where am I wrong? The Israeli are bombing gaza the Palestinians are firing rockets. Unless these homes are not on land, the fight is about land.
