All morality

Can be summarised as follows

To enjoy and have others enjoy, without doing harm to yourself or anyone else

Nicolas Chamfort

For the discerning reader, you can see the tinge of utilitarianism in this maxim. This however, reminds me of the article I read recently (Brian you remember) that talk of morality is no longer meaningful or something to that effect.

I think, echoing Nietszche and Onfray, that we have failed in creating a new morality. We are still caught up in the Platonic-Christian ethos though with a secular priestly.

Maybe I am missing something.

You do you identify as “we”? I ask as someone whose spouse is from a totally different tradition from the Christian/European one and yet as far as I can see the ethos/morality – the value on which they are based are not so different. And this is in spite of starting off with a different perception of what life is all about.

When Solon gave the Greeks law, he said they were issued from the gods. So different peoples in arguing for the supremacy of the laws have invoked the gods. I think the rules or mores look alike generally because we are all human. The differences are minor and only on specifics

Do you think that “and have others enjoy” implies a responsibility responsibility/obligation on one to do more than “not harm” others? And if there is a responsibility, is it of the individual, society as a whole, or both?

Weather has changed for the worst. It’s hot and dusty.
On the political side, there is quite some drama in the race for elections next year.
On the Covid-19 front, I have no idea other than that we are still in a national 10pm to 4am curfew that many flounder. Like you, I don’t watch news.

  4. There’s a certain angst that has come with the digital age, and really with the decades preceding it, that we are living in the “post-moral era”. This sentiment is probably founded in globalism.

But I think it’s unfounded. There probably is an a priori conception of morality, as Chomsky would probably lead us to believe in his linguistics, that all humans share.

But that’s just my two cents

  5. All morality comes from JEEEZZUUSS, Mak. Don’t you know this yet?

That quote is similar to the Wiccan Rede: An it harm none do what ye will.
