For those of you who ride, you know how biking can be fun and how a slight miscalculation can bring you tumbling down especially if you happen to ride wearing cleats. For the uninitiated, that’s a case where man and machine are one. It’s a combination at the foot unlike the many cases where it is in the hip.
Regular readers know of the many falls I have described ever since I convinced myself there was something to gain in riding clipped. Well, they tell you about energy transfer, and all many nice things but they hardly ever mention embarrassing falls that come with it.
So on Saturday I am out on my long ride as I am fond of doing. It is the final few km back home and there is traffic into the city. I am weaving in between cars in traffic that seems only to out a tortoise. At some point I get behind a van and all over sudden, the guy brakes. I am at such a speed that undoing clips is almost impossible. I stretch my hand to hold onto this van while trying to steady myself and just at that moment, it starts to move. At that moment, I was now seeing myself coming one with the ground and not the bike but luckily given I was on a soft gear, giving the bike some momentum wasn’t so hard.
I survived without embarrassing myself. If you are a learner, don’t embarrassing yourself by going to the highway or some other popular street because cleats have a way of causing embarrassment where you least expect to fall.
Have a fun biking week.
I think you survived without killing yourself. 😦
I would have thought this advice was given in
Biking 101. You need to retake the course.

I think I missed a class.

Glad you’re okay. One of the many reasons I don’t bike is all these near miss or hazard stories. (Although the main overriding reason is laziness.)

The hazards are few and far between.
The joys outdo any of the risks, mate. You should try it some time.

Sounds a bit scary. Glad things turned out OK!

Just the first moment when he braked. I was moving at such a slow pace unclipping was too hard. It usually raises adrenaline

Glad you’re still with us. That could have been a lot worse.

I know. I think almost all the falls I have had have been embarrassing due to the fact there has always been an audience.

Which makes things much worse!

You know! Falling in a deserted place is good. You rise up, check the bike if it is OK, check if you are OK, hop on the bike and keep going

Maybe feel a little stupid, but for no more than a few minutes.

Sounds like you had a great opportunity for some Kenyan hickey bobbing.
My worst tumble was crossing the angled railroad track on my way to work many years ago. You can imagine the whack that gives.

That must have been painful.
I find the falls from cleats very embarrassing since most often it requires an explanation to why you fell when there was no apparent danger

At least you were aware of your environment and avoided a mishap! Not everyone is quite that astute and fortunate! Glad you survived and are able to go again! Naked hugs! 🙂

once you are outside doing extreme sports, to be not aware is to court injury

I tried clip-ins, i really did, but I just couldn’t get the hang of them. Plus I made a total mess of things once at lights, then outside the SCG… and couldn’t get undone until a dude came over to help. That was the last straw.

Those things are an art. But they can be quite embarrassing

Cleats are the devil’s work! I can’t balance at the best of times, having my feet bolted to the pedal would be disastrous, You’re made of strong stuff however Mak, and I’m glad you bounced back *beams*

You are right about cleats but once one is used to them, riding can never be better.
