Krishna told Arjuna that he must learn to see with the same eye, a cow and a sage, mound of earth and heap of gold, a dog and a man who eats the dog. Seems you are there already.

How did it all start? As the past is shrouded in mysticism, so is the beginning of philosophy. There were the sophists, official mystics, wandering the country, trying to find the answers to those questions the ignorant public was putting to them.
With the rise of Plato and Aristotle’s academia, which intended to counterbalance religious superstition and believes in miracles with rational arguments, laying down the foundation of the western cultures, many schools of thought have flowered and formed the base of western culture, from rationalism to materialism empiricism, leading to phenomenalism and existentialism, not to mention the many offshoots.
As a young person, while the mind is shrouded in ignorance caused by overconfidence, the study of philosophy cannot be more than emphasised highly. One might choose the pass as a profession and become a scholar, a sophisticated intellectual, learned in interpretations and quotations, but in most cases, it will not lead to more than that.
To understand oneself and one’s position concerning the universe, one might be advised to focus on personal experiences made through the senses and their effect on the psyche.

Crates of Thebes was a wise man.
A bit of a hippie perhaps, but a man of his convictions.
I can appreciate the usefulness of philosophy, when it’s “applied philosophy.” That is using logic/reason to hopefully come to a rational decision. But you also understand how I despise the pedantic semantics, so often a result of non “applied” philosophy. When we start debating the meanings of the words “why” or “understand” or maybe even the word “applied.” This is when my hackels get up. These kind of debates are to obfuscate and avoid rationality and reason IMO.
One of my boys went off to college. He decided to major in philosophy. I tried to tell him there are better paying and much more available jobs out there. But he insisted. He lasted a couple of years before he concluded that philosohpy was the art of constantly spinning the narrative, instead of seeking truth.

We should be like Crates.
Philosophy is good not because of the answers but in aiding us have clarity on the positions we hold

Wait a minute Mak. Can you define clarity? 😉

That’s where philosophy comes in😀

Right! But, I have a fair understanding of the word. Though we could go on for hours about it if you want to…

Clarity- to remove doubt. To distill an issue. Think of philosophy as a way to live.

Ahhh, yes. But is there still any wiggle room for doubt? Is clarity an ironclad understanding? Or can it still be a little fuzzy? (I’m being facetious here, in case you didnt’ know) 🙂

Doubt is the beginning of wisdom. Those who have certainty on their side have led us to war

Well, I’m full of doubt. But I always thought it was just because I’m a dumbass 😉
Anyway, my point is we could go on for hours, days, weeks, or months, spinning round and round on the definition of clarity. This is the philosophy I have come to deplore.
…and you didn’t answer my question btw 🙂 But no need. I’ve had enough philosophy for the day. I have reached my daily limit! 😉

Naah. Doubt is good.
That philosophy that you deplore, I don’t generally engage in. But then again, it’s how to will away time
How have you been? Last I saw you, you had been driving all over the grassland looking for the good madam.

Well, I see philosophy as a good thing. But I’m a practical guy, and there is a practical limit to philosophy, beyond which is it no longer useful for my needs.
Now if I was into string theory, astrophysics, or such, I can see the need for delving deep into the definitions/equations to further our understandings. But for a practical guy, living as best as I can in my little practical world, I don’t need, nor want, the pedantic semantics. 🙂
Yeah, somehow I lost your follow from my follow list. I thought you may be having issues or something. (check your skype) I finally figured it out though and am back on board.
Thank goodness there have been no more lost dogs or lost wives since you last heard. 🙂
I spent my afternoon doing practical things in a practical manner, my step daughters (I raised her since she was 6 mo.) starter went out on her car. I drew the short straw to fix it.

They say, don’t ask me who, that when we stop talking we fight. So maybe semantics has its place. Lets not think to ourselves that those equations represent reality; they are our representations of reality and they could be wrong.
