Most museums in the west have, in their displays and storage, stolen artwork from the global south. It is time they returned them. If not foray reason but because it is the right thing to do.

Canadian cogitations about politics, social issues, and science. Vituperation optional.
Yes, after 400 years of colonial rule, history is at last being written and talked about more openly and accurately. All our nurtured beliefs’ have to be upheld and defended for fear of exposing their faults. Few people can accept the uncomfortable fact that they don’t choose their beliefs, their beliefs choose them. It’s the age-old dilemma between our ‘nature’ knowing instinctively what’s right and wrong, and our nurtured’ beliefs trying, and usually succeeding, in telling us otherwise!

I think it is not being talked about enough, especially in the places where it matters most.

Many of these pilfered artifacts and cultural and/or historical treasures that most definitely should be returned to their rightful origins. 🙂 Naked hugs!

When I studied archaeology, there was this excuse presented over and over again, that the western museums should hold on to artefacts from countries in crisis areas, to safekeep them and certainly the ISIS and Taliban have worked their asses off to give credit to this notion. However, the racistic underpinning, the people making the argument may even be unaware of, is the silly idea, that the western countries are somehow immune to war and civil unrest. Not so long ago there was a war that raged across the globe, but the worst shelling and carpet bombing of cities – where these museums stand – happened in Europe.
Ancient artefacts are our common heritage and we all share in the responsibility to transfer them to the next generations, but as an institution museums are worthless, if they can not provide a touch of the cultural past of a nation to the young of that nation. Therefore all artefacts should find home where they came from. This does not prevent us from making exhibitions, that can tour the world in order for us to learn from other cultures, or artefacts being moved to safety from war or other crisis. If the history of a nation is not awailable & presented to the nation, it will leave an opening for nationalist demagogues to fill that gap with all sorts of made up nonsense and grab power.

You know, that argument is still current even today, that artifacts can’t be returned to the global south because we will not take care of them. And while they are in Europe, they are hidden in basements. No one benefits. But you and I agree on one thing, the racist underpinnings of such arguments.
My friend, war is only fought in Africa and other global south locations. Not Europe.

Yeah, and the war in Ukraine is staged to give an excuse to hand out more lethal corona vaccinations (as I have actually been told), naturally, because there are no wars in Europe, and the war in Yugoslavia practically happened in Africa. WW2 was staged too, just to humiliate Germany, Finland and Italy and so on. Oh, how easy it is to fall into the ways of the conspiracy theo…. no wait, the ways of a moron.

What the hell. I have heard many things about Cov vacs, but not this one about the war.
All those wars didn’t happen. Alex Jones would tell us they are rumours.

There is this actual US doctor of medicine (the name of whom.I already have forgotten), who opposes Covid vaccination, tells us it is lethal and will lead to collapse of the western civilisation, as all the vaccinated people will die in a matter of months. She has made the claim that the war in Ukraine is staged to somehow force more people to take the vaccination.
Oh, and she has made it her business to sell a special brand of tinned food and training in a camp in preparation of the apocalypse – profet of wich she is. She used to be the leading doctor of an entire hospital, I mean she must be right, even if she was the only doctor who reinforced my preassumptions and fears, right, because she is a bona fide doctor? Never mind what the bulk of doctors and the vast majority of the experts say.
The question becomes, where did she and likeminded people get their preassumptions?
She reminds me of a Finnish doctor by the name of Rauni-Leena Luukanen, who claimed she was abducted by aliens and gathered quite a following in the 80’s. It seems these conspiracy theories have a lifespan of fashions, that come and go.

Phew, sometimes I would prefer a bit of boring over batshit crazy. But I guess, if you think of it that way, it does give colour to the world.
