A match

What are three objects you couldn’t live without?

A knife and I don’t know what else.

A match to light a fire if it came to that. Though I would try other means to start a fire as long as there was dry grass and splinters. I could use glass to concentrate sun’s rays on it or use stones to start the fire.

A knife to cut everything from small game to shaping weapons and self defence in case I was attacked by a mad and violent man. Or a cow. For that matter.

I don’t know the thirsty thing. I wouldn’t need a cup because I could use my palms or leaves or something to get water.

This is assuming a worst case scenario. And assuming I have clothes on my back. And maybe a blanket or something to cover myself though a fire can replace the blanket.

What would you need?

  1. This appears more like life during the stone age. Your views have not captured the global perspective of what we could do without. Or put differently, you could add, when all the technology is shut down. This reminds me of some friends of mine who got stuck in the middle of Tsavo national park. Their car broke down and they couldn’t describe the exact position where they were. Good enough, they had their phones with them and this saved them a lot despite the fluctuations in the network. Even though the Google map could not precisely give their location, they got help through someone who had the best understanding of the park. So for me, I would prefer to have my phone with me, my power bank and a sweater to keep me warm in case I have to wait longer

I thought about my mobile phone but I can do without it. It is useless on a hike where there is no network coverage. Even having a power bank at the summit of Mt kenya unless to charge your phone for photos will not do you any good. But a knife, my dear, and a match will be your friend.

But I could probably name three hundred things that I could live without.

the backaches, the neck aches, the headaches
Now multiply those 3 by 100 and you have the list I can do without.

This question does not specify the circumstances. In winter, in Finland, if the society does not support you a long warm furcoat, with a deep hood, warm winter boots and a proper knife, (or otherwise in my case preferably a sword exept it is a poor hunting weapon) would be the absolute minimum to survive longer than an hour. Pants, underwear, shirts and gloves are secondary. The choise of weapon is based on this single item logic, as a gun and bullets, or a bow and arrows are several items. But, a weapon would be necessary in case I ran into some dudes, who thought they needed my warm clothes more than I do. The blade can be used to make fire, wich I eventually will need, but the warm clothes are essential to have enough time to seek shelter. Water by melting snow and some game can be found in the nature and a spear, possibly made with a knife and fire would work for the hunting weapon. With the knife I could make snares and built a simple shelter from spruce branches.

It reminds me of the type of question “who would win, a caveman, or an astronaut?” In the void the caveman would die instantly, but in the savannah, all the gear of the astronaut would not help them much, especially if they were weak from living in the orbit.

Within the confines of a modern society today and assuming I do not have to name every piece of clothing separately not to die from cold, my bank card, so I can buy victuals and any medicines a doctor may tell me to take in case I got seriously ill.

Perhaps, I do not understand the question. Could it be, that the intent of the question is rather to what objects have you become enamoured, or addicted to? But then, why is not the question formulated otherwise?

I think you have done quite well.
My thinking is similar to yours. They must be trying to see what items of modern living have we become so attached to that we think we wouldn’t do without.

There’s an interesting channel on YouTube called Primitive Skills. It follows a man out in the jungle of Viet Nam starting with literally nothing. In five years he’s gone from sleeping under a rock ledge and making stone tools to having built a prosperous little farm. He’s made pottery, concrete, smelted iron, built a house, a water system, a fish pond, and domesticated chickens he caught. It’s fascinating.

Food, water, and air conditioning. 😉

Now if we are looking at alone in the wilderness and must survive, I’d want a hatchet, it can be used to cut/chop on one side and as a hammer on the other. I’d want a basic fishing kit, hooks/line. I’d want means to start a fire. I can probably make do from there. But damn! I sure would not want to have to!

    Too old for that shit.

Well, of course I couldn’t possibly live without my makeup bag … and a brush and comb! 😁

But seriously, are we talking living in an apocalyptic situation or just a simple survival situation like being lost in the woods? I think the match and knife would probably be useful in either case, but perhaps in the latter, a cell phone would come in handy.

If it got that bad, I’d just be ready to “go”. Without clean water, some food and minimal shelter and for some older people; medications, we’d all be screwed.
