He is not “stupid”. Rick Wiles falls into the “Deranged Crackpot” category. Dispatches from the Culture Wars covers his various wacky conspiracy theories, racist religious nuttery, and right wing hacks on an ongoing basis.
His followers? Probably stupid. But definitely evil.

In a way it’s like watching the aftermath of a bad train wreck: you slow, you watch, you shake your head at both the awfulness and the mess, and drive on. Not a thing you can do but keep moving.
Oh. That goes for Rick Wiles and Trump’s impeachment debacle. Just change the names.

Disgusting people like this make me sick and also ashamed to have once believed like they do. It is curious how he says that this plague was sent to purge sin from places on earth; places like China. He says that the communist Chinese people are godless sinners and then says, not the people, but the government. Is it just the government being affected by this “plague”? No. So, are the people of China guilty by association with their government or are they being punished in place of the government for some reason? I’m confused.
Or, is it possible that is just an outbreak of something horrible that has nothing to do with God or sin and attacks indiscriminately? Hmm, for some reason I think this is much more likely.

Ron has said in a comment below that maybe Rick Wiles believes god is punishing the Chinese people because of the sins of the ruling class. Like he did with the Egyptians killing their first born children while letting Pharaoh eat, drink and enjoy life, all this after hardening his heart

Nothing says “I’m a loving god” more than killing innocent people. It’s just another way to flex his divine muscles and put us in our place. Killing Innocents due to the sins of their leaders shows what a monster this god really is, and has always been. It’s a good thing there is no evidence that this god actually exists.

Since everything is according to “God’s Plan”, isn’t sin directly mandated by God? The Bible is full of stories where God himself causes the sin.

You know, from a theological perspective, he’s probably right. Consider this:
All the first-born sons of Egypt died as punishment for Pharaoh’s stubbornness after God hardened his heart. And 70,000 Israelite men perished in a plague because David took a census that God incited him to take.
So I think there’s a strong biblical precedent here. God gets angry with the leaders, induces them to do bad things and punishes the innocent.
That’s just how the big G rolls.

What a good way to get the innocents to love him.
Remember he killed the issue of David because he didn’t approve of what David had done. And no, he didn’t just smote him once. It took 7 days of smiting to kill the little babe.

This is what makes religion dangerous….very dangerous. It’s no laughing matter. People DIE over this shit, because they’re considered sinful and not worthy of saving (AIDS epidemic, anyone?). There are exorcisms everywhere in the US and kids are being tortured to death (google how often this happens). Now people who contract the flu are condemned to die by god because of some unknown sin. This is one of the things that, as atheists, we should be fighting against tooth and nail.
Unfortunately there is indeed strong scriptural support for this kind of horseshit thinking, so I don’t know how we can eradicate it, but every effort should be made.
Calling these bastards out on a blog is a good start. When I hear people speak this crap in person I have no problem calling them to the carpet on it (it happens more often than you think in the US religious midwest). I also complain to TV stations and blog sites, and have written local governments about what is happening. Does it do any good? Well, probably not. But I will not sit in silence while the christian assholes try to “cleanse” to world of the “sinful” and tell people that they deserve to be “purged by god.” Fuckers.
Ok, rant over….
Everyone have a lovely day. 🙂 ❤

Agreed. Perhaps I’m overly sensitive to this issue, but it’s for good reason….I used to work as an infection control nurse and saw way, way too much of this ignorant thinking by not only patients and families, but also by religious doctors and nurses. The effects and damage were horrifying (suicides, homicides, people refusing or being refused medical treatment, etc). I didn’t work in some rinky dink hospital out in the sticks, I worked at Mayo f’ing Clinic. Wherever there is religion, there is this kind of asshattery….it’s alive and well folks, and the consequences are real. Everything possible must be done to take it down. 😦

Plenty of people take this kind of thing very seriously. Notice this asshat is an American…most of the craziest preachers are, and they are numerous. They have mega churches and UNIVERSITIES here in the States…we have entire media channels devoted to these nutters pumped free across public airwaves. People from outside the US don’t have a good understanding of the level of religious fanaticism that happens here in the US, especially in the midwest and the south. I wish you were right on this one friend, but it is much worse than you imagine here in the land of the free.

It is astonishing. People tend not to believe how bad exorcisms are in the US. They think such things couldn’t happen in an enlightened society, but it’s hitting record levels…so much so the pope has even opened a special school to train priests in exorcisms. America was founded by religious extremists and this still alive today. Just for fun, here’s an article about how many mega churches we have, many led by some of the craziest preachers ever seen. Be aware this is only protestant churches and does not count catholics, who make up the largest religious majority in the US.

Since Trump has been elected, I’ve seen the kind of articles you’re talking about. In school everyone I know was taught that our Civil War was absolutely, unequivocally about slavery. Now there is something weird going on where people are saying our Civil War was more about “protesting government control over the South.” I’d never heard of this strange viewpoint until Trump, but apparently the seeds of it have always been around. There’s a name for it: christian nationalism. https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/59730492/posts/2578332734

This is a question I have asked for a long time….how can these nutters be taken seriously? IMHO, it’s because christian religious extremist are normalized in our country, even celebrated. If they’re rich on top of it and come from powerful families, not only do they appear to have the blessing of god in material wealth, but they can buy entire broadcasting networks, stadiums, etc to spread their version of holiness. Being rich will get you a long, long, looooooooooong way in life.
I have often wondered of muslim extremist are born the same way….are they normalized amongst muslims? I suspect they are missing the wealth element though, so I’m not sure how that fits in.
