Sparingly

How do you use social media?

If at all. And mostly to read what others are saying, and learn if that’s possible.

Let’s start from the beginning. The only social media platform that I use or spend time on is LinkedIn after quitting nosebook and twitter before it became x.

And on LinkedIn, it is interesting to see people call themselves experts on a subject because they have written a few blog posts on it, wrote a book that ain’t peer reviewed and have a podcast where the acolytes gather to listen to their king.

Is wordpress social media? Well, I spend a lot of time here. These days agreeing with people, avoiding conflict and getting entertained while at it. In this place, I talk about myself occasionally but use it mostly to clarify my thinking, and this happens sometimes when we disagree. It is the one place where a lot of learning has taken place.

So I use social media sparingly to learn, to communicate and to share pictures of my adventures.

Also sparingly. I spend time with a few carefully selected communities on Discord. There are a very few people I follow on Instagram. And WordPress, of course. But no Facebook ever, and I don’t use Tiktok or Xitter either.

    • I used to use–and like–Discord, until it morphed into something much larger and more complex. And somehow I lost my hold there, and can’t get back. They tell me I don’t exist.

For the most part I’m a gamer, with only a few games that interest me, and I prefer discussions (we knew that) groups as well. Beyond that I don’t do much outside of google…

I am working on getting my away around discord. Maybe I might come to like it with time.

I may want to try this Discord. I am not very social. I just do things online that please me. I easily get bored with bombarding information about people and their issues. That’s why I treasure the few who really make sense to me. They are really few. Most of the time I am just alone in the ‘social’ media

  3. I sparingly use it too. Can’t stand it, really. I get all I need here on WordPress. I wonder too, is WordPress social media? I guess to some degree it is.

  4. Sparingly is probably the wisest approach.

I’m pretty burned out on social media (at least with microblogging). We appear to have stabilized with several platforms, and keeping up with all of them is just too much work.

And I’m barely maintaining my WordPress presence.

My Kenyan brother, once again I totally feel united with you here. I only engage here on my blog and nowhere else. It is merely too polarized and biased, just as I am in writing this! 😉 However, your photographs – and yourself as photographer – need more exposure than on just the limits of a social media platform! Much love and naked hugs! Have a great weekend! 😉

  6. I don’t use flakebook, & only use Twitter [hate the name ”X”] to look at pics of cats, & follow my favourite musicians. I very seldom comment.

I follow you on here, & a few others who never seem to post, but I very seldom post myself.

Mostly just read a handful of blogs. Yours, Nan’s, Mano Singham’s, Ophelia Benson’s Butterflies and Wheels, although admitting the latter would get me cancelled by some socialjustice warriors🤪. Also some music blogs.

Also have a handful of Substack blogs in my feed.

Total YouTube addict, partly for movies and humor.

instagram as an observor, not a participant.

    X or Facebook…never bothered

Biggest issue is my addiction to “outrage porn”

  9. I use WordPress, facebook and you tube. Get a lot of information by listening to podcasts, etc. on you tube. A lot of blogs on WordPress are what you called echo chambers the other day. People reinforcing each other’s opinions.

  11. since I wandered into social media sites in the 90s, so much has changed–at that time even making a comment was considered a big deal, and what programs there were, were all encompassing. It’s much more sophisticated now, almost to the point of pain in some places.

On occasion I’ve made some wrong turns, but managed to get out from under the fallout. And being a game player from way back, that occupies me as much as blogging does.

You have been online for quite long my friend. Mine started recently. In the early 2000s and I am working hard to reduce my footprint. I don’t do computer games. I have tried but I never got hooked.

I don’t use social media. If I did have social media it would be to promote my blog. Please subscribe to my blog
