Thus spake Zarathustra

Well I just finished reading this book by Nietzsche. I have read two of his books so far and this to me was a bit of a difficult read but I was able to see his thoughts on morality, his relationships with colleagues, philosophers, women, freedom and other issues and most of all how I he saw himself in relation to all this.

The most enduring thing I will always remember is when he says to be superman, you must surpass man. He is asking we be eagles.

It’s a great read.

I read Will to Power in uni. An eye-opener, and that’s putting it mildly.

  3. I enjoy Nietzsche. His attitude toward women could have used some work. And yes, I know the arguments that it was a rhetorical device, etc. For me, he’s like Heinlein. Lots of stuff I love, and I roll my eyes at the rest.

Club, I used to think the same about his attitude regarding women. Lately though am beginning to have a different view. A few of the translators of his work argue that his position on women was misunderstood. I will give you an appropriate evaluation in a bit as soon as I can locate it.

      • that’d be great. from what I understand, his sister was not exactly the greatest and that can shade one’s opinion.

As i had promised am looking at the what the translator of Thus spake Zarathustra thinks was F.N’s take on women. First he says that most people are in error or have misunderstood Nietzsche with regards to women. He says German philosophers, thanks to Schopenhauer, have earned rather a bad name for their views on women. He says Nietzsche’s quarrel is with those who would destroy the natural relationship between the sexes, by modifying either the one the or the other with a view of making them more alike. Nietzsche would have woman become ever more woman and man ever more man. in this respect he says it is women’s strongest and most valuable instincts which help to determine who are the fathers of the next generation. And it is interesting to note that the ideas about women were suggested to him by a woman Das Leben F. Nietzsche who I think is the sister.
          Hope this helped.
